(poke) just wondering what you lot thought. my trophy is running 184.5 bhp atm with pipe and filter and sports cat. they say 10-15 bhp from the cams but i cant see that and 30bhp from the throttle bodies i reckon that a wish aswell. I'd get a supercharger instead if you're dead against selling the Trophy and getting an R26 or Focus RS mk1 for the same cash price.

TheJesus/Jon/KungfuSpaghetti has a s/c on his 172. Prior to the s/c he had throttle bodies. I think the s/c set up is putting out somewhere in the region of high 200's. From the set up above I'd say top whack will be 220bhp. You will get so much more for your money in performance terms from a s/c. Once the s/c is installed easy gains from other mods will also be found. ITB's also hammer your mpg to the extent you'll be getting about 15mpg from some normal driving circumstances. The s/c is slightly more user friendly from what Jon has said to me.

However, I know this is your thread and I always say things like this but if I were to spend 3.5k on mine plus the requirement for other items like a damper refurb which means that circa 4k will be needing to be spent within a short period of time I'd sell the car. You're just spending so much money to make the car go quick. With a s/c etc it will be very quick but I'd rather plough that 4k and 6.5k from the sale proceeds of the Trophy into a Focus RS mk 1 or R26 and a stage 1 set up.

I don't think I could do it to a trophy but I think I would go the turbo route, Steve sounds as though he has given birth to a beast and I can't wait to have a poke around/ride come national day.

Hi I'm sorry but that power figure for your car seems a bit high to me.

Unless you've had the car mapped I don't think that's an accurate figure and I'm not trying to cause an arguement I work with these cars a lot and they don't make power easily.

With regard to throttle bodies I personally feel that bang for buck they represent poor value for money and there are other ways of getting power far more cheaply which don't need a new ECU.

It may be worth your while to speak to JMS Tuning about there inlet as that represents very good value for money and the gains are proven on www.cliosport.net in there section.

Please don't think I am trying to cause trouble here I am just expressing a personal opinion and not one representing my company.

Good luck with whatever you decide :)

Re: upgrade coming soon...

If I may have my tuppence please;
It sounds to me like you want a car that's really fast. While the trophy/182 is no slouch I personally feel its all about the handling. Spending that sort of money for what won't be massive gain I think for a road car, is kinda burning money, money that you wouldn't get back selling the car. Supercharging will certainly give you better bhp/£ but I still feel its all about the handling, and without wanting to sound like a scratched record it does take away some of the Trophyness of the car. For me, do it to a 182 cup as you'd get some cash from the difference in value, or go down the jap turbo route, eg 200sx, impreza, or even previously modded skyline gtr. Mega power for not a lot of money.

Just my thoughts!!

FLOL. Its that type of comment that i was warned to expect on this website

The Trophy part of a clio is the suspension, that is all.

Personally, as Matt says 184bhp is high for your mods, i would expect more like 175 on a reliable rollers. TB's at £3.3k, no thanks & 230bhp. Oh Rly.

JMS RS inlet will give you a genuine 190bhp or so, & costs about £1700 fitted & mapped. Combine that with some decent cams (c&b's) for example & you'll not only see over 200bhp, but you will retain the clio power characteristics & great fuel economy.

S/C or Turbo doesnt do it for me tbh. I'd rather sell up & buy an R26/Evo/etc.

If your not on http://www.Cliosport.net, id join, far more info available than here :D

Good to see we are not a dissappointment then.

You may get a "debate" on that as well. The point is that they are a limited edition set up by Renault to be a little special and fiddlin g with them takes that away.
The rest of your post is ok though

Sir David, You completely missed my point! I don't give a damn what anyone does with their own car, the point was that you could get a good price for the Trophy ( as it is a relatively sought after LE) and do the same to a cheaper 172, maybe even get your money back when it comes to selling it later on....

Maybe the original poster is less cynical and doesn't have all the answers - yet ;-)

Why bother spending several thousand pounds to make a car (probably) less reliable, more fuel inefficient, in need of endless other mods to keep up (brakes etc.), reducing your future resale audience to about 10% (if lucky) of the audience of a standard car (effectively making it unsellable) in the pursuit of performance when you can sell the car and for the same money buy something like an Evo 6 which, even after the mods to the Clio you mentioned would wipe the floor with the Clio?

Thing is though an EVO 6 is not a cost effective track/road car whilst a Clio Trophy is ;)

Personally I'll just stick with my car and laugh when I compare the running cost of an EVO to a Clio.

I may be speaking from experience!! No, I'm not actually, as I tend to like my cars fairly standard.
I'm not having a go at anyone by the way. I totally understand customisation, individualism etc. It's just that as has been pointed out already, if looking for big power/speed, why start with a relatively precious premium bit of kit and take it apart at great cost?
I know there's a process of evolution and that is part of the fun, seeing the thing change and maybe no amount of money can buy that - so analysing in pure financial terms may not be appopriate, fair enough.

I wouldn't be so sure. Insurance (and perhaps fuel if used daily) aside, my two Tommi Maks had cheaper road tax, a cambelt was £325 fitted with all bells and whistles at Ralliart UK, a service was £199, no damper rebuilds required, tyres were about the same (a more common size), they were ridiculously reliable (I'm looking forward to Renault's bullet proof reliability over the next few years on my Trophy) and did not need ANY mods at all to get hit 60 in 4.5 and 100 in around 12(?).

The ONLY reason I did not hold on to them was that it was a bit difficult leaving them ANYWHERE. Can't really blame the car for that.

All fair points but do you get 25mpg round the Ring?

Having run an Integrale and a fair few other cars as tracktoys I choose the Clio as over a year its just a really cheap car :)

The problem with these engine mods is that s/c or turbo put you in the same class as Evos etc - so no deal. The T/B's would seem to be the logical, but poor value for money, option - however I am suspicious about the horsepower claims as I seem to recall that the engine is relatively small bore and hence valve/port limited. Also there is virtually no room for the correct inlet tract length (longer) let alone an airbox and cleaner. Some people go as far as fitting a cut down radiator to try to get it all in.

Far too much of a learning curve and undoubtedly expensive at the end of it all, with probably a car that is worth far less than before the mods. This is why, with more than a twinge of regret, I sold the T whilst still relatively standard, and bought a 2 litre Integra. There is a large after market of useful parts, even though it is necessary to be very selective, and the basic set-up of the engine does not need changing radically to see realistic gains.

Hope Steve doesn't mind me posting this. It's the turbo'd Trophy I was talking about, power at the fly so it's 290 at the wheels.

But then again figures like that are far easier to come by from a R26R

That is a huge power output!

As far as I am aware the cost of the setup above is less than that of some packages certain Renault Tuning Specialists offer which have far less 'claimed' hp output. I bet Stevie wont tell you his secret recipe though

Its a bit mental isn't it? As to how he has achieved it there is some on the rtoc and a thread on CS though I've not looked though tbh a lot of it is beyond me.
Been promised a ride at national day :)
