given the T is 5 years old almost it's possible that they were specifically developed for the Trophy but adopted by others....

Just to give you guys a quick update on my situation,

I will be picking up my refurbished dampers tomorrow after dropping them off 4 weeks ago mainly due to having custom seals made and the fact hes just come out of hospital didnt help matters. The good news is that the grand total for parts and labour was £196 with vat included (or less for cash  ).

I will talk to the guy tomorrow and ask if he would like me to pass the company infomation to you guys, if its of any help they are based in Newbury, Berkshire.

Does that include getting them Dyno'd??
Very good price as long as they are done to a high standard.

Forgot to say that as Konis are his main speciality he can do the rears to any spec you want.

He is very clever at revalving proper race dampers for any application, so doing the Yellow Sports is a doddle for him.

Paul Drake has been a Koni specialist for many years, working from F1 downwards. He is based at Goulds in Newbury and I believe helps to prepare their special hillcimb dampers.

I have used him a little to revalve Koni sport. I am just waiting to fit the latest efforts to my Alfa 159 - in this case I wanted the rears to have less bump than standard, and as Konis only adjust for rebound this required his help - apparently it is not an uncommon request for the 159 - I was quite please to hear that, as I had arrived at that conclusion even before fitting them.

Colin the 159 (2.4 diesel estate)is my commuting barge - replaced a 114,000 mile Volvo S60 diesel, which was actually a better car, but the Alfa was soooo cheap and had only done 18 miles.

Sounds good does this.

£200 vs what?? £400+

Not too keen on the 4 week turn around but hopefully if a few of us get it done there is should come way down as he will know what to expect.

This does sound cheap, what does this service cover exactly?

All seals/ bushes/ gas valve etc and are they actually Sachs parts?
Are they put on a dyno and tested afterwards?

This does sound good but if it isnt a quality job then they're soon gonna have to come off and be re- done again!!

What you say is true and most of us will be unwilling to let them be serviced by a none sachs recognised service engineer (if that's the right phrase) but prices for the refurb seem to have crept up and most people will not see the parts as being expensive (gas, oils and small rings of rubber) and will question where that money is going, your time and expertise, but it also means that people will be tempted by cheaper alternatives.
It would be nice to have some kind of breakdown of the price so we have more idea of what is going on.

Absolutely - in the interests of fair competition, it would be reasonable to compare the products and processes of both known companies. Right now, one's enjoying something of a monopoly situation.

I just got my dampers rebuilt by Ben at BG Motorsport.

Few reasons why I got it done there over and above fact I live in Towcester not a 5min drive from Silverstone.

Ben was very approachable and willing to answer any questions I had regarding his service. Was happy to show me a damaged shaft from a Trophy damper (thankfully mine were fine) in the exceptionally clean and tidy workshop, and explain what he would replace. Modest as well considering he set up the Leon TDi race cars in 2008 BTTC season, it was only when I pressed him on a few things about the Clio dampers that this information came out, he wasn't bigging himself up just explaining the shafts are the as the Clio uses, and that the Clio as standard is firmer dampered than some BTTC cars!

Some would say it's a waste of money but I went for new adjusters as part of rebuild rather than unpin the standard ones afterwards, I thought it was good value as they were set up by Ben and fully explained how they work including resetting them back to original position again if you loose count after adjusting them.

He turned them around in 2 days for me as requested which was brilliant.

And of course the dampers are matched on the damper dyno afterwards as well to ensure they are correctly set up.

Car fells superb now, though I have also fitted K-tec top mounts, steering feels even more accurate, this could be down to the standard bearings that sit inside the rubber top mounts being full of dirt making the passenger side one run really roughly, you could feel the grit in it, though I have cleaned them all out and regressed them they run great now if I ever need to use them again. Though I would recommend checking these out thoroughly if you ever remove your suspension as it will have an effect on steering response and feedback.

Out of interest, how much was the re-build by BGM?

The cost was just over £400 including VAT, just under excluding VAT at its present 15% to change in New Year back to 17.5% I believe.

This included:
External reservoir assembly
Piston rod guide assembly
floating piston (D45mm)
O-ring for floating piston
piston seal strip
Sachs damper oil
4hours labour

And the units now have blue anodised adjusters instead of red.

It is true about the damping. I was speaking very recently to an engineer from a suspension company in Northampton, and he said that unfortunately now the aftermarket stuff is lead by the marketing men who insist on very stiff suspension sets up normally very hard springs as the man on the street don't appreciate that hard suspension doesn't mean a fast car, even on a track, they just perceive no roll as faster because it must be, right??????

A good friend of the family is a well respected chassis engineer having been team boss of Nissan Europe Rally Team (Nissan Sylvia, 240RS, Sunny GTiR etc) and various other ventures with Emma's Dad so has an extensive portfolio and he did some recent testing at Brungtinthorpe with a Mitsubishi EVO I think Time Attack or Race Car and he lowered the springs rates by 2-300lbs but upped the damper rate (ie like a Trophy, not to hard a spring & firm fast reacting damper) and the car was faster per lap although the owner/driver thought it was slower, all about perceptions of roll in the car, roll is not always a bad thing. Hence why anyone fitting anything to a Trophy other than original for example aftermarket "coil-overs" is probably making a stiffer but slower car.
