so recently Mr Clarksons words have started to ring true.

its not the noise i dont like, i love music in the car and i love listening to the massive suck of the V6 air box on sunday mornings.
its just motorway road noise thats starting to get to me. having to shout at passengers, so i might have a go at adding some sound insulant to see what i can do to get rid of it.
can people suggest some angles of attack?
i realise that a good start would be ripping all the carpets up :( and putting something on the floor, but im not sure about the effort to gain Ratio on that one. another thing i was gonna so what fill the back of the door cards with some kind of insulant.
would a manifold heat wrap help? (wait i know that sounds stupid but hear me out) ovy thats not the intended purpose but i might block out abit of noise right?

anyway those are my initial thoughts. i would appreciate any constructive feed back, or would you like me to do a progress thread?

Good luck. If you try to put anything under the carpets you will quickly find that the carpets won't fit properly. You could try matting in the doors but I don't know how effective this would be on its own. Wrapping the exhaust won't do anything. The best thing would be to fit quieter tyres. Or buy a Bentley.

Spot on!!!! :) it's a Clio for gods sake!!!

tyres maybe an option but Bentleys are fairly cheap at the moment!

geez when did this turn into CS.

i was just saying that i might give it ago, because the road noise is quite bad on the motorways. i was looking for abit of help not sarcastic comments. thanks for the help though

Sarcastic comments :? ? I didn't think i'd posted on this thread yet.

Quieter tyres are your best bet (expensive) though you could try lining the boot a little better.

How about this for sarcastic...

1. Use ear plugs?
2. Turn your stereo down?
3. Completely fill the inside of the car with polystyrene balls?
4. Avoid motorways
5. Don't go over 30mph in 5th gear
6. Glue turf to your tyres
6. Err... i've run out of ideas

I've never been down the sound deadening route, but in my 'youf' my best mate fitted a sub into his saxo and thus inestigated sound deadening. You could fit dynamat or 'brown bread'(?) (cheaper version I think), but they're both quite heavy from memory and will probably set you back quite a fair amount of money, for potentially limited gain. I would imagine that in order to make significant improvments, you would have to cover quite vast swathes of the car..

As above, I would imagine that tyres will make a big difference to the sound. Personally, I've always felt that the T was quite agreeable in the cabin noise stakes, but then I did come to mine from a Ka which was like driving around in a bean for all of the engine and road noise.. :lol:

The other thing to think about is by adding sound proofing your also adding weight to the T. I have thought about this myself, but then I thought it it got too annoying I would take the Orb off and sell it for something quiter.

Thankfully at the moment I don't do many motorway miles to warrant the effort.

If you are considering it, you can get stuff from Halfords which you stick in the boot, door cards etc to stop noise. Don;t think it was massivly expensive. Mind I did see this a few years back now.

I wasn't being sarcastic - it is a Clio and Bentley's are cheap at the moment :wink:

However, In the interests of science - and on your behalf, I am going to Try Marrow's excellent suggestion this afternoon and glue some turf to the tyres and see if it does anything :eek:

sorry guys i was in a bad mood this morning. not cool i know.

i dont really mind it so much its just passengers really. im sure my to-be-posted Mark Fish set up will distract from the road noise.
how to fix a problem like road noise, create another unbelievably bumpy ! :D

Did the test, turf no good - too much wheelspin; ended up all over my ears after tho' so the trip back was a bit quieter :)

sorry - not helping much with 264's problem :-(

As an aside, the turf on the ears comment has me wanting to laugh heartily, but I'm on the train, so am attempting to supress said laugh...!

Add to it StP (standartplast). I used that in mine and it's quite impressive.
First put some on the wheel arches and that ad some to the doors.
Start with basic matt made from butyl (avoid bitumen based ones).
Dynamat Extreme and Standartplast Gold are in my opinion the best.
My previous car been done with Dynamat current with StP.
I stick to the other one as results are the same and StP costs half of the other one.

I've resisted posting on this thread so far (on the basis that I thought the original post was a wind up - no offence anyone!) but aren't we missing the point of the Trophy - a car based on the lighter pared down "Cup" version of the 182?

In other words, we bought a lighter, more focussed, slightly noisier car. I personally don't actually find it that noisy at all.
Keep it completely standard, spend the cash on maintaining it (decent tyres help) and it is a great car.

I don't own a Trophy, but a 182.
I am obsessed with weight saving, and the Clio is actually the heaviest car I own.
Sound proofing is only really possible by adding mass unfortunately. Dynamat and the like are all heavy materials.
I have used 1 product on another car which is lightweight and effective. It is a paint on coating. You can use it externally and on the interior behind panels and under carpets.

It's not a half arsed job, you have to strip a lot out to paint in the right places. I've done it on my other cars. Would I bother on the Clio? No, it's my quietest car anyway but thought you may be interested......

Well since the Bentley idea isn't liked, how about a Rolls ...

What you need to do , and it won't add weight, is record the noise you want to cancel out, go to a noise specialist, and they will create the opposite frequency to cancel out the original noise - Ferrari use this technology on their exhaust systems.
