Have you guys noticed this?

Normally the rear windscreen is filthy which means that once you put the car into reverse gear, yes you guessed it, you get a completely obscured rear window!!!

Arggg....

Yeah, its called a Smart Wiper in the specs.

The theory is if you have the front wipers on it must be raining, so when you go into reverse it wipes the screen to give you better visibility. Of course of you havent kept it relatively clean with the washer fluid then it'll just make a smeary mess :p

Unlike the auto front wipers on the full fat 172/182 which can be turned off, i dont think the smart wipe can be, but i've never actually tried.

Nik,
Sure this might have been asked before but what's the sticker on the front of your bumper? I noticed it on one of the photos.

Cheers, Nick

Sticker is Rentech, Renault specialist in Portsmouth.

The other thing I noticed about the wipers is when you spray the front, it wipes 3 times...pauses then wipes again, great for catching the drips of washer spray, but bloody annoying when you only spray a bit, makes it smear :)

Another anoying thing about the wiper/washer is that a vacum gets created under the wipers (in the middle) which means when you drive at anything over 50 you constantly get splashes from any washer spray..

The washer fluid never gets 'blown away' by the wind hitting the windscreen and just kind of 'twilrs' around in limbo under the wiper around the plastic lining....

On this point, when you have the wipers on continuous (I'm still on the original stalk) they actually move to a proper intermittent wipe when the car is stationary after you have driven for a while. They then revert back to continuous as soon as you move off again? I can't understand for the life of me why they can make this work but not on the right stalk position!

This is my first Clio, so not sure whether this is just a little quirk or whether I've got an alien wiper thing going on.

Chief - this is how it is meant to be... but then if you leave it on intermittent and you stop at a light it still continues at the 2 millisecond intervals and doesn't stop like on the continuous setting...

On that note the very fast continuos setting also goes into intermittent at the light but the intermittent intervals are a lot shorter than the normal continuous speed...

Who've I confused? :p

Me for one mate. I'm glad I made up a stupid name for the forum cos I'm Olly as well and it might all start to get even more confusing otherwise.

Either way, the wipers are a hell of a lot better than on my old C2 VTS. It had pretty much the whole options list on it but the auto wiper/lights were a nightmare. You'd end up flashing people if a cloud went over the sun and the wipers just had a mind of there own. I used to end up driving round with the lights on all the time just so's not to flash people every time you went under a tree/tunnel/bird etc!

The rear wiper should only come on when you put it in reverse if the front wipers are on. If your front wipers are on then the car must be wet including the rear window so it shouldn't make a mess.

After motorway driving in the rain the rear window is full of muck and is mildly damp. It's definately not wet enough to stop it getting all messy, even in a heavy down pour... (I come into a parking position only a few minute after coming off a motorway...).

Not that it is a huge issue.. I just have to ensure the washer bottle is always fulll! :)
