The mesh is there to add strength as you say, this is something I have considered.
I spoke to the guy who is laying the concrete today to discuss this. I told him at some point I would be fitting a 2 post car lift and was the mesh required. He said the mesh is there to stop hair line cracks but with a hard base underneath and well compacted aggregrate he said it will be fine. It wont crumble/break up. There is nothing but limestone slabs underneath the building, it's literally solid as a rock, it's also a pretty good strength concrete.
