I had read a blog from a team that races 172s and they had said that the rear wheel bearings were a consumable item and needed replacing pretty often.

Yesterday i changed my rear brakes & bearings for brand new genuine renault bits, and also cleaned several tonnes of crap off the inside of my rear wheels.

The car is now transformed! Much less road noise and also the handling & steering feel is improved no end, the car doesn't wander all over the place and the back end is much more stable and smoother.

Thanks for the heads up !

How much should we expect to pay for wheel bearings from Reno?

The discs & bearings are approx £130 from renault i think(the bearings alone should be half that, you'll need to get someone to press the old ones out and new in though), i had these sitting around waiting to be fitted for 6 months and after the re-deterioration of my cars handling recently i thought i'd chuck them on! Need to redo the geometry again as it was set front based on rear, and the rear is now straight again

The disks from reno with pre pressed bearing and abs ring fitted are £190.
You could always buy some after market disks with everything fitted to them for approx £130.
Or buy after market ones without the bearing and get the bearing pressed yourself, think there is bearing kits on e-bay for £30 ish.
Whichever way you go your looking at approx £130 if you fit them yourself.
Mine need doing before my next MOT in August.

i got some from GSF - genuine reno ones, can't remember how much i paid but it was a lot less than reno were quoting.

I'd only ever go oem on the rear disks

1. a lot easier to sort, pressing bearings in means specialist gear and then you run the risk of cracking/warping the disk or damaging the bearings.
2. they'll last for a long time anyway - i'll be changing mine over in the next couple of weeks, i've got 3 years, 15 track days and 30k miles out of them. I've changed the front disks twice in that time! I don't even think they need doing but i think the pads are on their last legs so may as well do the disks as they now have a groove in them and i don't want to feck up some new pads.
3. A bit more of the the above, the disks outlast the bearings so will need changing every few years anyway.

Yozzasport do the discs and the pads for £181, see below

http://www.yozzasport.co.uk/proddetail. ... rake_discs

Seems like a good deal. Think the pads are normally about £25

Has anyone got a guide for fitting new discs and pads on the rear? And bleeding the brake system? Am tempted to join up for cliosport if there are some good guides on there, could someone with membership say what guides are on there? Hoping the fubar stuff is on there now...

Think my easter holidays may now be full with this and painting the folks house #-o

gazza, there is a guide for changing the rear disks on there i think - there was one on his website anyway and he said he'd put them all up there. Check our guides also - there maybe one there also.

Bleeding the system is a ballache. fairly easy to do with the right equipment but can be time consuming - like blowing a tyre up with a foot pump from flat.

You won't need to bleed the system if you're just changing the pads/disks.

It's in the workshop manual.

175NM for the hub nuts.
Undo 17mm nuts on pad carriers(leave calipers in situ)
Undo 30mm hub nut
Pull disc away by hand, retrieve seal from back of bearing.
Rotate piston clockwise while pushing it in, screwdriver does fine for this, make sure you note how it was located, replicate when done.
Fit new disc with old(or new) dust seal, torque to 175NM(important as it preloads bearing, must be done accurately)
Fit pad carrier(use theadlock on bolts) after copper greasing pad contact areas(top and bottom where pads sit)
Refit pad shim on correct side & retaining clip for it.
Pump pedal to ratchet piston out.
Repeat on other side.
Bob's your uncle.

As for bleeding the brakes, get one of the 1 man bleed kits(not the pressure bleed ones, you want one with a one way valve and reservoir) and follow instructions.
