Hi,

Well it that time where I have to get the belts (timimg etc)done... what belts get done and how much does it normally cost.. Renault are quoting £658. Does that sound resonable or should i look around.

You can probably find cheaper if you go to an independent, and Renaults prices also vary massively in some instances too. Some recent posts show it's worth going to a credible firm who have a good warranty on their work, the damage that can be caused for a small initial saving isn't worth it.

I started a whole thread on this a while back but it never got stickied so worth a search.

Good luck with it.

Personally, i would only take it to a well recognised Renault Specialist, certainly not any old bunch of muppets on the 'good garage scheme' ... correct timing tools are required and even 'specialists' have been known to bugger up the timing on many occasions. My Trophy even came with incorrect timing from new lol ...

Not sure whereabouts you are in Scotland, but many members of Cliosport make the trip down to see Birchdown in the Northwest area. Very good reputation.

To be honest any garage you take it to has to give you 12 months parts and labour warrenty on any wirk they do so if they fuck up they got to pay to fix it
And it will take a complete muppet to mess up a timing belt on a 182 there so easy

You are actually the 1st person in the world to say this.

I assume you have the correct Renault timing tools & have completed the task on many occasion?

Perhaps you should setup shop as a 1*2 specialist & offer your services?

This is missing the point. Warranties (for what they are worth) are only any good after the event - no-one offering a warranty wants to pay out on them. How fun will it be when the engine is ruined, your confidence in the car destroyed, arguments about cause (when the customer may know little about technical side of cars), cannot get to work and you are expected to claim from the garage that did the damage. Also, are they likely to admit to it? If not, what will you do? Will they agree to fix it or let you take it elsewhere - do you want your car going back to somewhere that damaged it and to whom you are now giving serious grief. Will there be disagreements over the extent of the damage/repair, have you ever tried to reason with a mechanic? .....
And we all know about "Good Garage" schemes :).

I should add, the price in the OP for a Renault dealer is VERY good (I was consistently quoted £900 around the Midlands) but I think Birchdown, BTM Performance (my choice) do it for about £450 with added kudos if you know Renaultsport products.

Finally, I have heard of a few "specialists" who have got the timing wrong.

Wow, this is turning into one of those "I'm better than you, I know more than you", let's all talk shit to out do each other threads... And the English is appalling too..

So to bring it back to the original question:
I had a 72k service with Renault parts at Northwest Performance for £470. Absolutely no problems, I couldn't recommend them highly enough.

Don't know where you are in Scotland, but Falkland Performance in Glenrothes and Kenny Brown Engineering in Glasgow are supposed to be good.

I've used Falkland a few times and have no complaints, prices are generally better than Renault and they have the required tools. Make sure to ask for a camblet kit as well as an aux belt kit.

Guys,

I would like to go to somewhere like Northwest Performance but its a bit too far. I currently live in Glasgow and would like to go to a reputable place that gives warranty etc so you may have some come back if the engine goes pop but not to pay over the odds... I am now going to look into the two garages above and see what i find... If there are anymore alike it would be good to know.

I have just had the 48k service done the spark plugs and the HT Leads..... Is it only the Timming belt and the Aux belt that is needed at this stage or is there more....????? (without going mad :))

Timing belt and aux belt is all you need :D people say replace the aux belt tensioner pulley as well as it can cause probs, but i didn't.

I think the two of you having a row is basically misinterpreted. Everything is easy if you know how to do it, the problem lies when people do not know if the person they're taking their motor to actually knows how to do it!
