Essex for my sins.
Out of all the mags, the only one that gave a fair write up was EVO, they made a point of saying that it wasnt as sure footed as the 182, but it was still a very good car.

I personally cant stand the 197 i just feel that Renault have forgotton exactly what makes a hatch back HOT.

Its heavier, bigger and i dont belive that the extra Bhp has made a difference in performance. Why oh why didnt they chuck in a turbo lump, and make it 215bhp, now that would of been better.

drove one

hey guys

i drove a 197 after chatting up a salesgal at the festival of speed renault tent (arranged a drive at my local renault dealer in sunny basingstoke) - and can honestly say the 197 is nice and everything - but its never going to be the 172/182 cup/trophy experience (ever) and renault know this..........

first cup i brought was 12500 new and always felt special - this new 197 feels like a completely differant kind of car was planned when they made it............the one i drove had been trashed around a little i was told - but felt tight as a tiger and really did feel shortlegged and hefty.......not a car for me, but i just know there will be people buying them for the modern keyless ignition........the sporty marketing linking it to the F1 car.........the nippy performance........etc

even though in a years time people would have found ways of stripping them and waking them up - the day of the light go-cart clio seems to have passed..........i use my clio for road and track and therefore i'm bound to moan about weight increases and bits i don't want bolted to a car i don't want of need...........for me the new car is designed for the modern world of comfort over raw performance and i guess thats what their survey results tell them.........

hey i don't think that sounded too much of a moan did it? - in summary the car drove well and if i had not of driven and owned older quicker renaults - maybe i may be saying what the bald guy from the news of the world said?

thing that everyone seems to have forgotten is the 197 is based on the new clio and the majority of Clio buyers want more saftey, more gadets and all the luxeries of big cars like airbags etc. Unless they just made a specialist car for the sports market (when they last did this no-one bought it) the 197 was always going to be too big, heavy and slow to be an evolution of the 182.

Still don't understand why they only gave it 197bhp though. Should have done what BMW did and stick a small supercharger in it to boost low rev performance.
