Hi,

I have been quoted £580 for all of the the above supplied and fitted. Does that sojnd about right and is there anything else needing done at the sametime?

Just to give you an idea 519 Automotive (specialist in Bedford) quotes £450 for a cambelt. I am not sure if this includes the aux belt. It does not sound like the price you have is too bad.

I would take it to a known Renaultsport expert, it seems like a lot of general garages can sometimes not get the timing quite right when they change a belt or use the correct locking tools. Mine was done by a previous owner at a local garage (not a specialist) and it is fine, although I am not 100% sure the timing is spot on.

SoS - what makes you think that the timing may be out as I have also had suspicions with mine as well? I have read that if it is then you could be down by 15bhp???

Mine goes well, it is a bit lumpy on tickover when cold but I think they all do that, but as this is my first 182/Trophy I don't really have a benchmark for performance. I think lower mpg shows timing not being perfect, my mpg is slightly lower than expected which is why I think it may not be 100% but of course it could be my driving. The garage that did mine does a lot of good cars, but if I keep the car I would take it to a specialist next time.

Mine seems to go well too but ever since I had a 172 catch me up easily and get glued to my bumper I was suspicious. Also at 5250rpm it does not seem to pull as aggressive as when I first got it. I am changing all the belts again soon so will go to a specialist as well. Might have to travel though as I don't think there are any down here.

JSThompson- I would be fairly happy with that quote as I could not help myself from laughing at the dealers face in Renault when he quoted me over double that! I felt bad for laughing but it seemed madness.

There are a lot of specialists about, I spent a bit of time on here and Cliosport and found that 519 was in the same town and had a good reputation. It is worth travelling to a good place.

You can't 'adjust' or alter the timing from changing the belt - If you lock the cams and the crank in place then they will not move while changing the belt. If you don't lock them in, the belt could go back in place so that it may be one notch out either way on a pulley. This would cause awful running at the best...you certainly would know about it! So with the timing, it's either correct, or incorrect, there's no almost.

Sorry if that sounded abrupt, I shouldn't write posts when i'm super tired! With this: "So with the timing, it's either correct, or incorrect, there's no almost." This is the case when replacing the timing belt, not when altering the ignition timing which is a whole different ball game ie. at what point the spark plug sparks.

On the cam shaft pulley's there is a hole that you put a drill bit/bolt through to 'lock' the pulleys in place, essentially to stop anything turning when you take that belt off. And there's another hole to lock the flywheel, doing this stops the top and bottom half of the engine from turning seperately from each other. Once locked, the belt gets removed and a new one fitted. You have to make sure there's no slack in the belt in the length that runs from the cam pulleys down to the crank pulleys, and the slack is at the rear of the engine where the water pump and tensioner is. The tensioner then takes up this slack - this is where the issue can arise. You have to put tension on this pulley and then tighten the locking bolt to hold it in place. Too much tension causes noises to occur from the pulley bearing not liking the extra strain = not good, not enough tension can cause a pulley to slip a tooth on the belt = very not good! So the key lies in setting the correct tension.

Hi All

Getting my cambelt/aux belts done next week. Water pump is most likely going to be done too if the part cost is not that great.

It was suggested that the dephaser parts cost was about £150. Most likely going to do this too. Does this parts cost seem about right?

If there is anything else which you might suggest doing at the same time let me know.
