Hi all,

Firstly let me start by saying hello to you all and congratulations on an excellent informative and interesting website.
We are in the proccess of searching for a 182 Trophy in or reasonably close to Hertfordshire hoping to pay less than £10k. I was firstly after a little bit of friendly advice prior to us actually buying one and maybe ending up with the wrong one for us.

:?: A. I assume that the Sach dampers are reasonably expensive to replace (although i assume they are presently under the manufacturers guarantee) is there any signs to look out for which would show wear and tear.

:?: B. Is there any signs to look out for that the car has been used more as a track day car (we are more after an unthrashed original version with little or no mods)

:?: C. Am i correct in thinking that the trophy should not really be taken to a local renault dealer and should be serviced by a specialist garage, (is there any near to Hertfordshire?) if this is the case are these repairs still covered by the manufacturers guarantee.

Many thanks and keep up the good work and all going well we may be telling tales of our trophy in the not too distant future

You will be lucky, £10500 is the going rate more if condition & mileage are spot on.

A, They are covered under warranty so stop worrying, if your still worried then may be the trophy aint for you. They do have faults but then they are the budget supercar stalker.

B, tracking the car will not hurt it, thats what it was designed for, most on here buy with the intension of realising a track day.

C, any dealer will do, just make sure you get a good one :D If you have a specialist give them a go.

Check the car number on here as some have been 're born' after insurance loss.

Get it HPI'd & if in dought walk away & buy another.

a/ Yep, the sachs will be expensive to replace, and short of sticking them on a damper dyno I'm not sure how you'd tell they have deteriorated, unless they are obviously leaking. They can be rebuilt so the prospect is not nearly as scary as it may have been!

b/ never tracked mine so I'm not really sure! One obvious one would be if there were eyebolts (or holes) for harnesses. I'm sure others will have some pointers on this!

c/ The trophy can be serviced by your normal renault dealer - the guts if it are the same as a cup so there is not much they won't be familiar with. I think people use specialists because they are both cheaper and better than most renault dealers! I'm lucky(?) to live near a decent main dealer so I've always taken my car there and paid the premium for a pukka renault stamp - if it wasn't on the doorstep I would have gone to a specialist. As long as a specialist services according to the manufacturers schedules using Renault parts then your warranty will still be intact.

Excellent, thanks for the reply's guys.

We currentlly have about 8k saved up and as soon as we sell our Corsa 1.8 SRi (No laughing!, hoping to get about £4.5k) we will be checking on here and Pistonheads for any suitable trophys up for grabs. I have seen a couple for around the 10k mark and we would be prepared to go slightly higher for the right car. So fingers crossed we should be buzzing around in the not to distant future.

thanks again for the advice

Welcome James, the questions have been answered, so I'll just say hurry up and sell that Corsa and join motoring Nirvana! 83 is for sale on here now! If that doesn't work out;

only thing i'd add is that tracking the car won't hurt - just make sure it's been serviced regularly, most people will have taken the car to the rev limiter often enough to make a quiet b-road as harmful to the car as a track.
