As long as you go for a custom remap done on a rolling road and not an off the shelf change of chip then it'll be fine. I had it done on my 172 Cup and didn't have any trouble.

I spoke to a chap at the Autoshow about this. He had a graph for a regular 182. Not much power increase, just a smidge, but a much smoother graph, more torque. They can change the rev limit too. He said you can try for a week for free, take it back if you don't like it. I'll dig out the details later.

Essex for my sins.
I would suggest looking at one of the Remaps which BB Tuning, Yozzasport etc do.

This is a much better option than a super chip and works out at the same price.

Have a word with Nik he has just had the Group N ECU Upgrade done. From what i have heard the difference is very noticable.

Nik any and all info would be much appreciated, I heard about the possibility of doing this but haven't yet investiagted properly. One of the technicians I talked to about this was getting 198bhp from his 172, 15% approx more seemed quite a good return; not sure about effect on torque though.

Hillpower specialise in the Clio and apparently do custom re-maps. If you look at the discussions on cliosport this subject seems to raise more controversy than anything else. I would guess that ganns will be unlikely to exceed 3-4%, but if you have other modifications then you can ensure that the mapping is optimised for your set-up.

I keep hearing about superchipping/remapping. Now, I understand why a remap would be necessary to get the full benefit of some other modification but what’s the deal when applied on its own. There’s no such thing as a free lunch, otherwise the manufacturers would have that spec as standard. What are the downsides – engine life, fuel consumption, tractability, starting etc?

If done well and matched to the engine there are none. The manufacturer has to build in a safety factor for poor fuel and maintenance as well production line variances. the biggedt issue will be warranty. Some firms offer a separate warranty - not sure if this is very common in the UK

there wouldn't be many gains on a std engine i'd have thought, most people usually have at least a decat, exhaust and uprated filter first. an honest tuner would tell you to come back with more mods then the difference would be easily noticable
