Hey guys! I went along to the Rally Day in Castle Combe on the 18th. Bumped into a fellow Trophy owner and had a quick chat, don't think he was on the forum but told him sign up! Anyway was a great day out seeing loads of track day cars, 60's, 70's classic rally cars along with the Group B monsters which were absolutely epic going round the track, especially the memorable noise of the Audi S4.

I also had the opportunity of going for a ride in Ken Block's Focus WRC with Jari Matti Latvala behind the wheel! That was absolutely epic, from the start ramp to the entrance of the track which is about 70yards it was doing 70mph! I've never seen anything quite so rapid in my life, felt like a roller coaster only much much faster!

Anyway got loads of pics of the day and will load them on for you guys to see, but one thing i did notice was Tom Cave's new proton S2000. The proton looked incredibly quick on the track - almost as quick as the Focus WRC! Which was quite surprising and even more suprising when I saw what was under the bonnet!

Take a look! Yes it's a F4R - with 280bhp @ 7,800rpm and 271ft - very impressive if you've got the money to throw at it!

WRC car was an amazing experience! It's an absolute animal! Well worth going next year! It would be great to maybe take some Trophy's there next year as there were quite a few standard and track focused cars!

The donuts in the focus were superb! It's so powerful literally spinning around on the spot with no effort! What was quite suprising though was that they measured the speed of a lot of the faster cars from the start to the track entry - like I said it was about 70yards - the focus WRC was hitting 70mph in this distance whilst other very quick cars were hitting high 40's! There was a bit of a surprise when the red escort rs1800 mk2 (above) hit 61mph which wasn't far off the focus speed! I think the escort was running a 300bhp Millington diamond, based on the original cosworth engine but tweaked much further! Not bad for a 30year old design!! The focus was absolutely seemless going through the gears!

6R4, 5Turbo 2, RS200, S4 and Stratos that's serious money parked in those pics, I can hardly believe how much some of these go for especially if they have history.

I know! There's a 6R4 on eBay now going for aroung 80k! I've seen an ex-works RS200 go for 150k in a sale! It's crazy money!

Yes definitely an F4R, I spoke to the servicing crew and they confirmed it was. Cue I agree, i don't know why they've chosen an F4R engine either when they could use a natural screamer like a vtec. It's still quite an achievement to have obtained 280bhp from it!

Hello,

I was lucky enough to have a free ride on the special stage in the red Mk2 Escort driven by Phil Collins ( no not the drummer).

The car does indeed have a Millington engine that produces 305bhp at the flywheel with a kerb weight of 900kg so is very quick!!

Speaking to Phil before the ride he said that the two most impressive parts of the car are the sequential gearbox and the brakes, It was incredible how late he was braking for the chicanes.

Overall an amazing experience and i can now see why this car is so competitive on the Irish tarmac rallies that he often competes in.

Cheers

Ben

Ben that mk2 looked amazing! The sequential box really does make a massive difference, It's just seamless through the gears! I did notice the brakes on it and they were massive.

Cue said:
an F4r running 280 bhp? why do that... start with a jap engine and it's easier to upgrade....

The S2000 regs only permit N/A engines.

No way do I believe that the F4R can produce 280bhp without forced induction.... Spending 000's on it would only get it just above the 225bhp level. You sure it was an F4r??
