Been looking at Trophy's for a while and think i've found a bargain only issue is it needs the dreaded front shoxs and a timing belt. I've done a little reading and can anyone clarify if new shocks are available? I know i'm looking at around 500-800 for rebuild and looking at say 400 for timing and alt belts to be done. The car in question has been offered for 3k as is. What are your thoughts guys? Go for it? Its 92k one owner from new.

Renault UK have indicated that a new batch of shocks will soon be available but knowing Renault UK, soon could be in 12 months time, maybe longer. The price is also unknown and if it goes back to the original price, it was about £1,200 per side.

With the belts, at that mileage you'll probably also do water pump and (possibly) dephaser. Budget £600-700 for all that at a specialist and double that at a franchised dealer.
All in, you'll be looking at about £4.5 to £5K plus any tidying up (wheels, tyres etc.) that may be required.
It's OK but I have not seen many people get a true bargain Trophy.

At that mileage I'd say get the dephaser done too - You'll be looking at around £600 from a specialist + at least £450 for the damper rebuild.

I would go for it at £3k.

Well first thought is, it's a bargain for a reason or more probably several. The cam/alt service has been left very late, what other service history does it have? I'd be looking for lots of oil changes.
Who knows how much the dampers will cost to refurb, could be at the more expensive end though. New ones are supposed to be on there way from Sachs but will be believed when they appear and who knows how much they will be, the original expensive price or the more recent "clearance" amount.

BTW make sure you get a recommended specialist to do the cam/alt service and that may be a little more than £400.

Edit: looks like I got beaten to the punch by the above :)

Good point re the belt(s) Hoolio. It should have had one at 72,000 miles or 5 years - why does it need one now?

Cheers guys, i've to see car friday to see what the rest of cars like but its meant to be very clean. I will check history and have a good route about it first. Dealer had it advertised but once they knew it needed belts and front shocks withdrew it and said it was to be sent to auction. I pestered them and they offered me it at 3k as it stands.

Well another call from the dealer has ended this bargain. Service manager says it has a bad oil leak and a bad idle also. Looks like it'll be auctioned so anyone in sunderland area keep your eyes peeled. On another note i found a nice local 182 cup with good bits already added and although not a trophy may tic my boxes. Appreciate the replies guys and the pm. If i get a cup only will i be frowned on here??? ;)

I'm surprised a Renault dealership is selling such a high mileage car

They are going to get so fed up of calls on that car - has it got FSH, have the dampers been done, has the cambelt been done, will you take an offer if I pay in cash ...
I also think this will probably end up as the technicians' go-kart for the next couple of weeks!

Increasingly, franchised dealer groups are dumping part ex's through a side business as part of their main business but they don't offer a full warranty on those cars and I bet they won't on this.

It was still being advertised on ebay and the evanshalshaw website still. The had 4 calls in an hour and i had a deposit securing it. It was put in to get a years ticket on it but then they realised how much work it needs. I am suspicious though and wonder if they priced it wrong and now realise and are now putting people off it. It may end up for sale elsewhere for a lot more ;) its number 450 i think.

Well maybe but they have it up for over £3.6 with 98k plus and with work that will probably take it into the £5k mark. At your offer of £3k it may have been worth it but for 5 there are lower mileage better looked after/condition examples out there.

So what is wrong with it actually? Those two things could be relatively easy fixes and it could go for a bargain price.
