Clio 182 - Replacement gearbox cost -HELP

Hi,

I was driving my 182 the other day and I had various probelms with the gearbox and was unable to put the car into 2nd gear without a crunching sound.

I have since taken my car to Ren O Tech in Chelmsford and they have told me i basically need a new gearbox and have suggested that I replace the clutch also!

I've been quoted £1300!

Does this seem fair????

Need some advice asap as works to the car will take place tomorrow.

Thats 1/3 the price renault would charge.
Sounds cheap to me.
Only other option is to have the box rebuilt, but it they encounter probs a new box will still be needed #-o

Surely that price would be for a secondhand gearbox? Or doesn't that include the clutch and labour?

No clutch included.
Renault price for new box with fitting would be £3K+

I had mine done under warranty and it came to over 4K, think gearbox is 2K and the rest labor but im sure thats just what they charge renault and you could get a much better deal if you tried.

There are various independent gearbox reconditioning specilaists who are much more reasonable. For another car I used a company called gearchange near Bridgwater in Somerset - could not fault the job. www.gearchange.co.uk

gearbox is £630+ vat from renault
clutch is £140+ vat
£150 fitting
