We have discussed before about what fuels work best with the Trophy and I mentioned in another thread that I was going to do my own mini survey! So here it is - in all its succinct glory!

I've always sworn by Optimax (superceded by V-Power as we know) so have used that primarilly with my Trophy from day 1 of ownership, 3 months ago. It performs well - no complaints at all - and I am aware that it has the best cleaning agents. But then I tried Tesco 99 RON for 2 tanks and have to admit that the car seems to go better. There is even a slightly deeper growl to the exhaust note (NB I have a Janspeed full system and ITG Panel Filter). The car is more responsive and pulls harder through the gears - a more pleasing drive. This is not in my head - it is quite apparent. I am surprised. I am yet to notice a change in mpg against V-Power usage.

I should mention that I have also tried BP Ultimate for 3 tanks in the past and noticed nothing much apart from a stinging price tag! I wouldn't recommend it over Tesco or V Power.

Esso Super has also been tried, admittedly for 1 tank only, and that felt like regular unleaded so don't bother even going there.

Brief survey and not exactly thoroughly done but I do feel that the 99 RON from Tesco is the best fuel for my Trophy. I will continue to use it and note any changes, if any, over the next 5 tanks.

Discuss!

The colder weather of the last couple of weeks will also make your car more responsive - could this have played a part in the change?

yes me too, my fuel economy is much worse using tesco 99. Possibly something to do with the ethanol content?

I find the power delivery is very smooth and linear with tesco, but lacking in low and mid range torque with V power. Because of this you feel more of a kick at 5k when the car comes on cam with the V power.

Am trying bp ultimate at the moment, so far doesnt seem much different to 95.

If you can tell the difference between 98 and 99 RON then you've got special senses!

Likely to be colder weather (denser air) in combination with your filter.

It's funny, I used to find a marked different in the performance between Optimax and Tesco 99 RON in my TTQS that I had before the Trophy also... The Audi much preferred Optimax... Strange but true. All interesting anyway. :D

I think the ale would be better drunk, leaving the car with the petrol

Very interesting and I'm glad you've posted your findings, my next tank will be the Tesco muck so I'll let you know my findings and If i agree.

The fact is though that Bio-Ethanol on it's own is 107 RON, which only means it will resist pre-ignition better than petrol at 95-99 RON, because it less susceptible to combust under the same pressure as petroleum spirit, this is great if the engine is tuned for it because it means higher compression ratios (and therefore more fuel and air) can be achieved. BUT, Bio-Ethanol has less embodied energy than petrol so requires more for the same power output, ie. it is less efficient. So by this rationale, petrol that contains up to 5% Bio-ethanol (Tesco 99) will have less embodied energy than the equivilent 99 RON petro (V-Power)l, so will be less efficient. Whether this makes fuck-all difference over a tankful is yet to be seen.

all i use is just petrol. or is that diesel??

seriously....

ive only ever used sainsburt 97 or tesco 99. the only reason for that is cost and not performance. both are relatively cheap per litre so it doesnt hit my wallet too much as #356 is doing 25 to the gallon at the mo.

A EVO owning friend of mine said he stays clear of the Tesco 99RON due to the Ethanol content. I'm sure he said something about it burns alot harsher than V-Power & not good for the engine over any long period of time.

Or I imagined it

I will continue to use V-Power

Ive had some very powerfull cars in the past and have always run them on SHELL Fuel
Old Optimax and now V-POWER.

1) Escort cossis running 412bhp with 32psi boost
2) Civic Type r running jackson Supercharger with 280 bhp at the wheels.

I no its good stuff and have never had any problems with my cars running on this fuel and they have had considerably more power and torque.

I run V-power in my TROPHY 2

False economy. More miles from V-Power and it looks after the engine better than any other fuel. Round my way, there's not much difference in the price between Tesco 99 and V-Power, although the Lucozade is half the price at Tesco.

Yes.

Depends on the local distribution.

EVO magazine did an article about it earlier this year.
