Stealers brake check.....

So i took the Trophy to get it checked to see what kind of condition the brakes were in as i was getting some travel on the pedal..... £46 later and the results were in,

pads 60% worn on fronts and 70% worn on backs, ok so i've got another couple of thousand miles left.
i asked what the condition of the discs were in, to hear
"the discs are black and we're concerned about that. they shouldn't be black......" he then went on to say that they would usually go a blue colour if they got too HOT from too much heavy braking.

I could see this heading towards ££££££££££££££££££££ so i said my 24k service is due in a couple of months so would wait.


So, what are peoples knowledge of brakes going black or what he might mean? i have no clue so your advise/views would be greatful. should i be concerned about this or is the stealers trying to get money out of me.... as the front would cost £274.39 all in and rears £364.14.

The phrase 'bend over & pucker up' springs to mind.

I got complete front end set up inc braided hoses (brembo high carbons & ferodo ds 2500) for £190, yozzasport.

Rears, usually just pads as don't do much £40+.

Spend what you save on some track days

If i do need new discs then i may go for brembo's for that reason.

Yup that is disgraceful!

Like most on here I got Brembo Max Discs paired with DS2500's from Yozza at something like £200. Bought a tub of copper grease and bob's your uncle, new (front) setup for £200 + 1.5 hours work + 2 cups of tea.

If your feeling adventurous, it's pretty simple to be honest. Find a mate and pay him in beer and you will do it easily.

think when the discs need doing it will be for something else instead of ones from Renault,

but can anyone explain what he might mean by the discs being black?
Mike - have you seen anything like this when servicing 182 etc?

lmao, this is laughable mate.... wtf is he going on about black and blue... they are steel disks, the only colour other than silver they would turn is a nice rusty orange.....

do not get your brakes done at reno, the oem ones are gash anyway..... there are very good specialists up and down the uk - which are both better qualified and cheaper than reno stealers.

Find it hard to believe the rears are more worn than the fronts as the brake bias will be set up more to the front. There is less meat on the rear pads comnpared to the fronts to start with anyway so I would definitely get a second opinion on them

Brake discs go all sorts of strange colours due to the cheap crap they are made of, but they do go a blue colour if they are overheated, and the usually warp with the extra heat too, giving a vibration through the brake pedal - very noticeable under braking.

The rear discs will be more expensive than fronts too as they include the wheel bearings IIRC

...but still, their pricing is a joke and you can get better quality discs from yozza or somewhere for a lot less

Ah yeah forgotten the rears have the bearings in, but surely the rears should last a lot longer than the fronts?

i got the car with 10k on the clock but don't think the front pads had been changed..... but you never know.

think i'll just get the pads changed at the 24k service and once the discs go i'll get a kit from yozza or someone similar.

the rear pads normally go at the same time as the fronts, they are much less hard wearing than the fronts so the brake bias and load counter the quality of them...

I wouldn't bother upgrading the rear disks, they seem small but are ample, upgrade the rear pads to something like mintex extreme, this coupled with better front disks, pads, lines and fluid will have you amazed at the difference.

ive had front discs and pads changed i got the original renault discs and ebc pads for a shade over £200
