I am in need of 4 new tyres and looking at prices for premium brand 205/45/16 tyres are £100+ each including P&P/fitting. I used to run a ph2 172 and they ran on 195/45/16. I remember with Conti Sport on the 172 the handling was more playful than the Trophy. Has anyone considered or are running 195 tyres on their Trophy? Looking at the prices the 195/45/16 are significantly cheaper, especially with having to buy a set of 4. I would rather buy premium 195 than cheap brand 205. I would be interested to hear your opinions. Thanks.

It was mentioned a few weeks back that the 195 conti tyres as fitted to the 172 have a square footprint and is almost identical in actual width to a 205 profile.

Im sure there was a thread about this on CS, obviously not relating to the Trophy but useful nevertheless. I tried to find it but failed. The general concensus was there wasnt much difference opn the road and alot of people went for 195s instead due to cost. One guy that races a 172 said he felt the 205s grip a bit better. Although as the suspension was designed with 205s il be sticking with them personally.

Also its not just about the footprint its about how the tyre behaves at whatever slip angle. Tbh you will need to replace them in a few thousand miles anyway so its all good!

I run 195s but in 15 inch fitment. Pretty much transformed the car from a crashy uninspiring drive to a well rounded, confidence inspiring drive. But then I went from no namers on the 16s to pe2s on the 15s

I hear the general opinion is that 15" wheels is an improvement for ride and handling, but I wish to stick with the original 16" and I don't track my car. Anyway, I've gone with Dunlop's new Sport Maxx RTs in 205/45 16 83W from Blackcircles. Most reviews I could find on these tyres are average to good, but couldn't find any cheaper premium tyres for less at £95 each including fitting. Conti's and Michelins were all £113+ each.

I think Peter Tomalin of EVO fitted the Dunlops to his mx5 with mixed initial feedback.

The Sport Maxx RT only came out a few months ago and are supposed to be an improvement over the old Sport Maxx. But to be honest I probably won't notice any difference and should be an improvement over my 4 year old Michelin PS2!! :D
