Hey guys! Just thought it would be interesting to ask clio sport owners a 'hypothetical question'.

If you could which of the following engine mods for the F4R would you go for and why?

  • Turbocharger
    Supercharger
    Throttle bodies

Rather than just some bolt on mods I'd rather speculate my cash on strengthening the whole engine and fitting custom cams that would allow it to rev beyond 9000 rpm, then lower the gearing to keep the max speed in each gear the same as now!!

Bet that would cost big big money!!

Off the shelf conversions I'd take RStunings supercharger kit as you get 250 bhp and don't have to go to the hassle of stripping and rebuilding the engine.

Or if your a bit switched on, build your own turbo kit, as with the aid of a boost controller you can have a lot more flexibility by tailoring the power output.

Throttle bodies are always an interesting choice, the only downside is that when you want to take them a stage further the only additional mods (cams/headwork etc..) you can fit move the power band further and further up the rev range which is great on track, but for normal road driving could get a little bit tedious.

S/c for me, love down grunt without the waiting for spooling up that you get with turbo's and throttle bodies require the slam pannel being removed - therefore you'll need bonnet pins.

I'd never really thought about the torque differences in the lower rev range so I just compared Pauls 328bhp Supercharged clio against my 267bhp Turbo clio and the torque readings are quite interesting

At 2700 (both graphs start here) SC= 130 Turbo=150
3000rpm SC= 160 Turbo= 170
3500rpm SC= 160 Turbo= 212
4000rpm SC= 200 Turbo= 245
4500rpm SC= 210 Turbo= 250
5000rpm SC= 220 Turbo= 255
5500rpm SC= 230 Turbo= 240

After this point Pauls remains pretty constant at 230 all the way to 7500rpm, whilst my poorly designed turbo set up suffers massive boost drop which causes the torque to drop off dramatically.

I have both these stored on my computer and if anyone can tell me how to post links from photobucket without them being cropped I'll post them both up for people to peruse.

Sorry Cue those are the torque values, I'll be more than happy to post the BHP if you'd like?

The BHP of SC Vs Turbo are as follows

At 2700 (both graphs start here) SC= 65 Turbo=75
3000rpm SC= 90 Turbo= 95
3500rpm SC= 110 Turbo= 140
4000rpm SC= 150 Turbo= 185
4500rpm SC= 180 Turbo= 215
5000rpm SC= 210 Turbo= 240
5500rpm SC= 240 Turbo= 250
6000rpm SC= 265 Turbo= 260
6500rpm SC= 290 Turbo= 260
7000rpm SC= 303 (The little turbo runs out of puff after this and the power drops off)
7500rpm SC= 323
7800rpm SC= 328.2

Can you explain please.

Sure can, basically the turbo set up has some flaws and only seems to be able to flow a maximum of 12psi positive pressure when the engine speed exceeds 5000rpm on wide open throttle.

As such my top end is some what pathetic as the boost has dropped from 20psi.

It will give a maximum of 280 bhp if your willing run cat less, or 267bhp if you choose to retain your cat like I did.

.

I clearly need to do some more reading up on turbo's as I really can't understand why that should happen #-o

Don't worry mate it's taken me ages to get to the bottom of it and Identify the problems, Ktec still haven't worked it out.

As such I've removed and sold Ktecs full conversion and am building my own.

Needless to say it should be quite impressive when it's finished. :D
