Ive put together some theory questions, see how well you do... :)

Ill be honest, when I was reading through the book there was one or two of the following questions I didnt know.

(1) A pelican crossing that crosses the road in a STRAIGHT line and has a central island MUST be treated as…

· One crossing in daylight only
· One complete crossing
· Two separate crossings
· Two crossings during darkness

(2) At a puffin crossing what colour follows the green signal…

· Steady red
· Flashing amber
· Steady amber
· Flashing green

(3) You are following a vehicle on a wet road. You should leave a gap time of at least…

· One second
· Two seconds
· Three seconds
· Four seconds

(4) You are driving a slow moving vehicle on a narrow winding road. You should…

· Keep well out to stop vehicles overtaking dangerously
· Wave following vehicles past if you think they can overtake quickly
· Pull in safely when you can to let following vehicles overtake
· Give a left signal when it is safe for vehicles to overtake you

(5) You must NOT sound your horn…

· Between 10 pm and 6 am in a built up area
· At any time in a built up area
· Between 11:30 pm and 7 am in a built up area
· Between 11:30 pm and 6 am on any road

(6) You are testing your suspension. You notice that your vehicle keeps bouncing when you press down on the front wing. What does this mean…

· Worn Tyres
· Tyres under inflated
· Steering wheel not located centrally
· Your Sachs dampers need servicing ;-)

(7) Braking distances on ice can be…

· Twice the normal distance
· Five times the normal distance
· Seven times the normal distance
· Ten times the normal distance

(8) When driving in fog in daylight you should use…

· Sidelights
· Full beam headlights
· Hazard lights
· Dipped headlights

(9) To drive you must be able to read a number plate from which distance…

· 10 meters (32 Feet)
· 15 meters (50 Feet)
· 20.5 meters (67 Feet)
· 25.5 meters (84 Feet)

(10) You may drive with fog lights switched on…

· When visibility is less than 100 meters (328 feet)
· At any time to be noticed
· Instead of headlights on high speed roads
· When dazzled by the lights of oncoming vehicles

(11) You are driving on a motorway in fog. Reflective studs can identify the left hand edge of the motorway. What colour are they…

· Green
· Amber
· Red
· White

(12) What is the national speed limit for cars and motorcycles on a single carriageway?

· 70 mph
· 60 mph
· 50 mph
· 30 mph

(13) What is the national speed limit for cars and motorcycles on a dual carriageway?

· 30 mph
· 50 mph
· 60 mph
· 70 mph

(14) You are driving along a road that has no traffic signs. There are streetlights. What is the speed limit?

· 20 mph
· 30 mph
· 40 mph
· 60 mph

okay I'm being honest and haven't cheated! I'll put a for first answer b for second and so on...

1. b (its either b or c not 100% sure on this one but I think if I saw someone starting to cross I would stop anyway so ill say b)
2. c
3. b
4. c
5. c (again not 100% sure on this I thought it was any time after 11pm in a built up area so went for c)
6. d :p
7. d (braking distances in highway code are so out of date and car dependant I wouldn't be surprised if they say 10 times more)
8. d
9. c (couldn't quite see this question... )
10. a
11. d (I think?!)
12. b
13. d
14. b

To start with I've not done the theory test - passed before it was introduced and haven't read the highway code since then so these are long shots based on how i would treat the scenarios.... plus the highway code is sooo outdated it's laughable.

(1) A pelican crossing that crosses the road in a STRAIGHT line and has a central island MUST be treated as…

· Two separate crossings

(2) At a puffin crossing what colour follows the green signal…

· Steady red

(3) You are following a vehicle on a wet road. You should leave a gap time of at least…

· Four seconds - two for dry conditions

(4) You are driving a slow moving vehicle on a narrow winding road. You should…

· Pull in safely when you can to let following vehicles overtake
· Give a left signal when it is safe for vehicles to overtake you
I'd say both of these depending if there is anywhere to pull into...

(5) You must NOT sound your horn…

· Between 11 pm and 7 am in a built up area i think.

(6) You are testing your suspension. You notice that your vehicle keeps bouncing when you press down on the front wing. What does this mean…

none of the above - could mean a number of things. To start with if it's an american car it may not mean anything is wrong. So this question and answers are wrong. I'd start with looking at the springs and shocks as the likelyhood is that it'll be suspension related not tyre related in a firm riding car. So the DVLA don't have a clue.

(7) Braking distances on ice can be…

· Ten times the normal distance but again it depends on the car and the tyres in use, if they are worn R888's then it'll be 100's of times the normal distance compared to normal dry conditions or if your driving an Evo with winter tyres on it'll be around 3 times the normal dry conditions.

(8) When driving in fog in daylight you should use…

· Dipped headlights

(9) To drive you must be able to read a number plate from which distance…

· 15 meters (50 Feet)

(10) You may drive with fog lights switched on…

· When visibility is less than 100 meters (328 feet)

(11) You are driving on a motorway in fog. Reflective studs can identify the left hand edge of the motorway. What colour are they…

· White, iirc colours indicate junctions.....

(12) What is the national speed limit for cars and motorcycles on a single carriageway?

· 60 mph

(13) What is the national speed limit for cars and motorcycles on a dual carriageway?

· 60 mph

(14) You are driving along a road that has no traffic signs. There are streetlights. What is the speed limit?

· 30 mph, should be assumed unless signs say different.

It's clearly far too long since I took my test, I mean what's a Puffin crossing FFS, what was wrong with those black and white bits of road that you stop at if someone is waiting to cross?

12/14.

I'm shocked that some people don't know answers to questions as straight forward as some of these. I got the number plate readind distance wrong, and the puffin crossing wrong. I feel I can justify these as not important or whatever (amber or flashing amber? wait till green!) but i'm sure some would still slate me!

This backs my case for a mandatory retest every 5 years.

Always good to wake up the grey cells!! Cheers BenG

Mate, I didnt even know what a puffin crossing was ! its always an eye opener reading through the highway code stuff again. I can totally see your point about re-tests every 5 years, but it should be more like a refresher course than a re-test ? Its crazy how I (and most people) drive daily and dont know the rules of the road, we should all know it inside out !

i drive to the conditions, not the regulated speed of a road - 20 past schools and slower in the wet than in the drive on back roads etc.

Anyway....
