my trophy is now due a major service due to age not millage. Renault say either 72,000 miles or 5 years wot ever comes sooner. my trophy only has 13,500 miles and Renault are saying i need a major service ! i personally think spending over £1000 for a major service for a car with only 13,500 miles on the clock is not needed. however i dont want to snap a belt a write my engine off !! any advice ??

Go to an independent renault specialist and have the work done, you'll pay about half that.

Don't mess about with Cambelts IMO, its expensive

Its not the mileage its the age of the belts that could cause issues.

As has already been advised take it to a specialist and you won't pay anywhere near that.

If you are based anywhere near Basingstoke in Hampshire let me know and we can take a look.

Could that mean you have 5 year old brake fluid, coolant, what is the condition of your brake pads/discs as with that mileage, it will likely have sat for a long time? Pollen filter?
I have just had a massive service (basically everything fluid/lube) including cambelt, brake pads, discs etc. on a 16,000 mile car. It needed doing. The coolant, for example, was way too light in colour.
The above is subject to the previous history and what has been done.

I had two previous Renault main dealer services with receipts to indicate air filter, oil, oil filter and that's about it on each. The fact that the previous services were by Renault made me want to get it looked over more so ;-).
It just feels much fresher now. Not cheap at all but they are machines, they need to be maintained.
That's why people often say buy a regularly used car - much better, I know what they mean now.

if anything, things like the aux belt tensioner are more likely to have seized up through lack of use. Under-use is just as bad for a car as long term abuse as things dont keep moving how they should.

Rubber perishes, and both belts are made of rubber, so at 5 years they need changing. Brake fluid absorbs water over time by it's nature, so if it's never been changed, it need to be done regardless of miles. Coolant degrades, and if you dont change it, the corrosion inhibitors in the original stuff will cease to have any effect and your engine and whole cooling system will start to rust from the inside out.

proper servicing is an obligation not an option I'm afraid.

I should be able to do all you need for a little under £700

Just had mine done at 11k miles for her 5th birthday, very painful but necessary.

Don't neglect it - you have a very desirable car in owning a Trophy with that kind of mileage and not servicing it properly really won't do you any favours at all. Mine's just had the whole lot last month at 12,500 miles and it needed doing. It had a major service, cam belt and damper re-furb. Feels vastly better for it too!

Think of it another way, if you were looking to BUY a car like this, would you consider one that had missed services? Especially a cambelt service? Truth is you'd walk away, wondering what else the owner had neglected to do to it..
