Shifters ?

i installed a senic shifter on 66 today with a quaife style nylon knob. i did some tatting on the shifter before installing this included transplanting the internals from a new 182 shifter to the senic shifter and also adding the bend on the shaft to position towards the driver (with the help of a propane torch), i also added a brass bush to the bottom of the shifter this helped with keeping the shift stiff on the up and down movement. The shifter has the same throw as before but makes a huge improvement when driving spiritedly. by having it closer to the wheel.

Next is to get the plastic bush on the box to tighten up the sideways movement when in gear but so far so good. anyone else played around with shifters and whats the experience been?

Also thoughts and opinions on modifications away from oem ? im new to the trophy world and am experimenting but making sure to keep everything reversible if i have a change of heart

It's looks really good. If it makes the car more special and fun for you then go for it.

How long did it take to swap over the shifters? I have a PMS shifter waiting to be fitted on my trophy.

How long did it take to swap over the shifters? I have a PMS shifter waiting to be fitted on my trophy.
depends i took my time as the weather was nice, took me about 4 hrs but could be done in 2 hrs. i did a pms on #56 that took a bit longer as it needed to be adjusted on the linkages to get the gears but that takes no longer than 30-40 mins if you know what your doing before hand. the big time saver is not removing the exhaust i had to do this on mine but the pms one and the stock cat on #56 allowed it to slip up the side saving time faffing around trying to undo rusty exhaust bolts.

Thats good to know. It looks like the car has a sports cat and I have access to a lift so hoping I don't have to drop the exhaust.

Good luck with the install, the pms is a really tidy and tight package you should really enjoy it.

Hi guys,

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I’m unsure what to do 069s shifter mechanism, if you could help……it has a short shifter fitted and I find it absolutely awful.

I’m thinking of a PMS shifter or buying a refurb kit for the current one and returning everything to OEM.

I’ve read that the PMS can be like a rattle-snake, but has the perfect height and +ve gearchange for a spirited drive. Any opinions?

Great work with the modified Scenic shifter! I had one recently and the positioning was much better. I put the standard one back on when mine started to rattle (not sure why, not disassembled to find out)

The internals of the shifter can be renewed. There used to be the Yanoo stiff shift that tightened this up a lot, but NLA, so refreshing the oem parts could help.

As well as the bush & circlip at the gearbox end, there can be play in the linkage rods. The short linkage rod from the bush to the long linkage rod may now be NLA, but you may find one or may be Renault have made some more now (see left of first pic attached & the part number) the gaitor (small rubber disc in the pic) wasn't needed.

There can still be play between where the short linkage rod slots over the large linkage rod. I managed to get one layer of tape around the attachment point and this also helped a lot to reduce the side to side play.

The PMS (Pure Motorsport) shifter will eradicate this as it uses new linkages. Some have managed to eliminate the rattle with the PMS system. A well setup PMS will get you closer to the slick and precise shift of a Type R.

Engine & gearbox mounts can make a difference. Most people fit Pflex bushes to the dogbone (lower gearbox mount) and notice improvement.

Powerflex insert to the engine mount reduces movement a lot too, but can increase NVH and then the gearbox upper mount becomes the weak link. Some have used Tigerseal to a similar effect with less NVH (likely lower durometer rating to polybush) I've used a fuel hose cut in half to slot (with encouragement) in to the small gap between the mount rubber and the metal casing as a compromise of fore/aft movement and NVH (this gap is there with new Renault mounts. I've found the Febi Kangoo one fills the gap but is softer, so no better)

Some have fitted Vibratechnics (or KTec, the same item) upper engine & upper gearbox mounts and these will significantly improve directness of shift. These can increase NVH, but some have fitted and not experienced this (some of those have left the dogbone as standard) apparently these settle with time as well. Letting the car idle to settle the engine position, before tightening the mount bolts, can apparently help reduce NVH.

Currently I have a standard shifter with the refreshed gearbox end bush, circlip, short linkage rod with tape, purple Pflex dogbone bushes, standard upper mounts, plus the improvised rubber insert on the upper engine mount and this is a decent road setup.

A slightly slower shift works better on these cars as the synchros can struggle with short shifters and aggressive gear changes.

Gearbox oil choice also helps. I've found Castrol Transmax (rebranded Syntrans) makes shifts slicker, including from cold. Great value oil as well!

New clutch and clutch cable (genuine recommended) can also give a smoother, more rewarding gear change.

i was thinking of doing the refresh with the white gear box bush at some point hopefully makes the feel a bit better but its getting round to doing it.

I bought the white bush from Renault a couple of months ago.

A bit fiddly to reassemble but a bit of patience and it can be done.

The car had done about 130k miles at the time of replacement.

Definite improvement for a small outlay. I'd say the shift was 20% more 'snickety', if that makes sense.

I'm keen to try a Clio 2 RS with a PMS shifter though.
