Service cost query

Hey guys,

I've just been quoted £800 by one Renault franchise and £2k by another for a cambelt and aux belt service. Seems a tad random .. Can I ask what people expect to pay. It's a regular 10 year interval service, which I believe should include the belts (every 5 years they are due?).

Who was the 2k quote? The guys in Southmoor? They wanted to charge me £1600 plus vat for a small sump leak. You should talk to Dan as I suggested or suck it up if you want to keep the Renault stamp. £800 is actually not bad.

lol. +1 for go to Dan. Renault stamps are only good while its got warranty.. that ship has long sailed, even for a 20k car. Better to have quaility stamps and a good story/history.

Is an independent RS specialist an option, or does it have to be Renault?

Hey guys thanks for the replies. I'm not hung up on it being main dealer, I just thought I'd contact two as I'm within 10 miles of two franchises. I'm more than happy with a good specialist. I have a Lotus that has never seen and never will see a dealer as the quality of specialists is far superior and delivers more confidence. Just finding my feet with a Trophy, so greatly appreciate the advice and views.

Chances are renault would fuck the timing up anyway. Take it to a specialist who knows renaultsports. Most dealers don't know what a clio trophy is.

I opted to carry out the 5 year service myself this year. There's few specialists close to me with good reputations and after having owned the car for so long I've become quite familiar with it. It was done by a specialist 5 years ago then checked by a specialist a couple of years later which was reported as being ok. When I came to check it this year the inlet cam was a few degrees out! I noticed the tensioner wasn't set correctly either. Perhaps it came loose recently, I can't be sure. I can see why people with little knowledge of the engine and procedure get it wrong, even some 'specialists' get it wrong and the Renault manual is also wrong (to a certain extent). as long as you take it to someone with a good reputation then you can't go too far wrong and at least you have someone to take it back to if it does.


I've noticed the prices are quite high and vary a lot but you must consider having the dephaser and water pump changed as good practice, especially after 10 years if they've not been changed already. I changed mine although they were running absolutely fine, I'd rather not have to do it all again for the sake of £140.

This is a list of parts I used, together they cost me around £600 including the cost of the special tools which were £150.

Runs like a dream now but it did take me 3 days, if I was a mechanic I don't think I'd get much business.

I had a price of just shy of £800 from Mick @ Diamond for both belts, dephaser, water pump, oil/filter, air and pollen filter and a gearbox oil change. Seems a good price, but a bit of a drive for me!
