I say this as advice from experience (and ignorance of thinking Renaults will forever manage to avoid rust).

Try and get the undersides of your cars properly protected by someone who knows what they're doing. I'd been used to BMW's of the early 2000's (e46 and e39) so was familiar with common rust on these. I thought the Clio's would be impervious but at 17 years old and what must be the last 10 years+ of my Trophy being in Scotland, road conditions have taken their toll on the underside and the rear arches.

I've decided to spend a small fortune and get this fixed given values will only ever go one way and there's nothing quite like these. That being said, if I could rewind the clock back to 2014 when I got the car and have the underside fully protected I have no doubt the underside and arches would be in completely different condition.

Protek in Bathgate (courtesy of Gally on Cliosport) will replace the rear quarter panels among other bits and pieces and Preserve and Protect (https://preserveprotect.co.uk/) will work their magic on the underside.

If you're based in the south of England your car will have no doubt had a much easier life so get it done now!

Out of interest where did you get rear quarter panels from, any idea on cost please?

You can actually still buy the rear 1/4 panels direct from Renault.

&
7751473486

Don't expect any change from £1300+ for both them.

Those are the part numbers for the inner panels?

YES My Bad, Looking at the wrong numbers,

what you want is item 2 and item 6 for the full rear 1/4
or
Items 4 & 8

Screenshot 2022-11-06 at 7.18.07 pm.png

Item 2 - Panel QTR LH C2 - 7751473003
Item 6 - Panel QTR C2 - 7751473034

Item 4 - SILL Panel LH C2 - 7751472483
Item 8 - SILL Panel RH C2 - 7751472485

All available from Renault France but like I say you are still looking at £1200+ for the rear full rear 1/4s

Under £1500 for both rear qtrs sounds pretty reasonable, id pay that if i needed them to complete a restore.

Wow. Some fairly comprehensive works going on there. Great to see. I think this is probably going to be a necessary process for quite a few of us in the next few years, particularly cars which are used as intended and don't necessarily have the luxury of snoozing in heated garages. I'd better start a saving-up fund for No. 407 soon I think!

Cheers. The inner arches were an eye opener as well. Kev (Gally on cliosport) said the fuel filler area was a bit worse than expected but the rest of the inner arches were actually fairly typical!

Suspect all but the most pampered garage queens might have hidden areas behind the main bodywork. It's a big outlay and it's on 130k miles but if a time ever came where I was to sell it (not likely) I'd view this is a massive selling point.

Well those pics are an eye opener 😳 I was a little freaked out to discover some surface rust on the rear rails a while back and whilst I checked the inside of the rear quarters back then and found nothing, I will be having a closer look soon.

Great job on the repairs. I think the general rule with these clios is if any visible rust around rear arches or above sideskirt, then its going to need a bit of surgery.

Great work 👍did you manage to remove and re-fit the chassis number/data sticker and Clio 182 Trophy sticker from drivers door shut?

I don't think mine ever had this in my ownership.

Apologies on the lack of update, there were a couple of minor things I wanted Protek to sort- nothing major, a couple of shut lines were a little off and a window surround seal was a little kinked, Cannot fault their customer service though and would definitely recommend.

Here is the finished article-

For the eagle-eyed amongst you I have since replaced the rusty old wheel bolts in these photos with brand new ones from Kam Racing. Ultimately it ended up not being much shy of a full respray, only the roof and front bumper didn't get done. The budget already being burst meant that the work had to stop somewhere, mission creep with these jobs is to be expected to a degree! Ended up getting a new bonnet too.

Will definitely get the bumper done at some point and finally replace that damn cracked fog lamp. Next immediate steps will be getting some local to detail the car and give it some decent protection.

That looks really good, congratulations! I was wondering about the wheel bolts :)
What did you use on the front grill plastics, they look nice and black?

Cheers all. I've no idea if they used anything in particular on the plastics although I did replace the section that's at headlight level a few years back as the original was faded.
