I can hear a "tap tap tap" coming from the engine bay of my Trophy when at idle. Also the idle is quite lumpy and uneven. The tapping is actually louder from inside the car than the outside even with the bonnet open. The taps increase with the revs up to say 1500/2000 but then I cant hear anything. Other than that the engine is smooth and pulls as should. Puzzled! Any thoughts?

How many miles does the car have under its belt? It could be the dephaser. Has it recently had it's major cam belt service done? Is the tapping Random or rhythmic? It could be this "new" problem of the tensioner reaching the end of it's reach, because the cam belt is too long, and knocking on it's stops. This is the internet it could be anything or nothing.

In total she has done 33,888 miles. Both aux and cambelt were changed in summer 2010 at roughly 15k. Tapping is rhythmic and like I say increases in tempo with revs.

That does sound like it could be the dephaser though they do sound like a diesel when they go so maybe its just that your engine is a little noisy.

I see you bought that quite nice low mileage one. I posted a link to the cam belt tensioner "problem" and there are plenty of examples of noisy dephasers on ebay if you do a search. Like I say it's pretty impossible to diagnose over the internet, mine can be be pretty rattley and it's very low miles ,if you are worried or it gets worse get a specialist to have a look at it.

If it was a dephaser you would know about it as they are a lot louder than you describing. Mine had the same noise before I took it to JMS last year and I think they told me that the carbon canisters make this noise.

If the noise was a de-phaser you would be able to hear it louder under the bonnet with the engine running.

As hoolio said its difficult to diagnose remotely but i suspect it is the carbon canister control valve opening and closing
these are mounted on the off side front and can transmit noise in to the cabin.

If it doesn't do it when cold, or it goes away over 3k it's probably not dephaser. It could be a loose spark plug, could also be your carbon canister.

Like side though it's hard to diagnose over the Internet.

The noise does deffinately seem to be coming from the offside. Im not overly concerned atm as it doesnt happen every time and doesnt seem to be causing any problems. (didnt do it today when started from cold and the idle didnt seem as lumpy) I did put a full tank of V power in yesterday which is its first with me. Have to do some digging to find a specialist in the Noerth East. Im a "better safe than sorry" type owner.
