Is there a hole in the back of the standard CD player to fit a cable of some description so I can connect my iPod/iPhone? I've considered buying one of those transmitters but they can be rather unreliable..

Yes, assuming you have the original fit Update list stereo with Expert mode.
Bought one of these cables with red, black, white wire (3 pins). Pulled stereo forward and can see a space in the black block ( configured 3 pins, 2 pins 3 pins). Does it actually connect in here? seems rather loose, or do I need to remove the stereo completely? Or plug in elsewhere?

You do have the correct wire? It appears to be a special one. 2 pin green block.
