A question for those of you who have had a car written off or just those who happen to know – how do you go about agreeing the settlement? – Do you have much sway with the value that they give you for the car or is it basically in the hands of the thieves, oops, I mean insurers..?

PS. My Trophy is still in one piece, this is for my dad whose car was written off just over a week ago..

Pm funkymunky, i think he did a lot of "negotiating" when he crashed and offered at the time to help anyone else.

my specialist subject....

yes... whatever you do do some research and DON'T accept their first offer.

A lot depends on what's in your policy - they have to find a suitable replacement vehicle and calculate it's value.

When i totalled the m3 it took me 3 weeks but i got them up from £17k to £21k. They'll use autotrader and glasses guides.

I'd say get armed with adverts for similar vehicles from range of websites and argue till you can no longer be bothered. They bleed us dry through having a sort of cartel, this is your chance to get as much back from them as possible.... they'll always under value your car, sometimes they don't even consider mileage!

That sounds great, thanks Cue!! I shall try to find some time to look at values etc. When the assessor asked in passing how much my dad thought the car was worth, he said around £800 above a price that we'd seen elsewhere.. No harm in playing it that way!!
