How to tell when you need new brake pads/discs?

Maybe a stupid question but is there an easier way than taking them apart? My brakes have started squeeking now and again and I'm wondering if they are low.

Only way is to whip the wheels off, measure disc thickness and have a look at the pads really.

Mine were a state when i got round to them...





Who needs discs anyway?

You can pretty much tell without taking the wheels off.

Make sure the discs don't have a lip and you can see how thick the pads are - anything near 1.5-2mm thickness and they need changing.
