I have been looking around the 'net for a few hours trying to get a feel for the best types of oil to put in my Trophy when it arrives.

Here are a few of the best links I found that discuss the subject:

http://forum.cliosport.net/display_...41100&ReturnPage=&PagePosition=0&ThreadPage=1

http://www.xpowerforums.com/Motor_Oil_FA_Questions.htm

Also, did you know that you shouldnt put fully synthetic oil like MOBIL 1 in your new Trophy as it can cause problems... see the snippet below (the full report is one of the above links):

"Switching to a Synthetic on new and used cars
DO NOT USE a fully synthetic until the engine has covered a little more mileage (approx 10k) because the engine is still bedding in for some time up to this point. Then switch to a Shell Ultra Helix or Mobil 1. What are the benefits? Less wear, less power loss in the engine, better fuel consumption. "

Interesting post...

After reading many threads on Oil before, it is clear that people have many varied opinions on what is best/should be used in your car.

I did a bit of reading, found the right grade oil and found a good quality oil suitable for the car.

Too many opinions around to take notice of every piece of advice, so best of sticking with what you use instead of changing around often.

I'm not sure what should be used in the trophies but my advice would be to stick with what you get on with :)

Essex for my sins.
The Trophy comes with a bedding in oil as standard which you are suppose to keep using until its first oil change, Speaking to BB Tuning they recomened a High Quality semi syn oil which will be fine for the car. Not sure about cost but will find out.

As Tom says there are so many differing views on what is best to do with regards to oils etc. I have decided to change my oil to a fully syn after just 1000 miles, to clear out any of the running in crud. I am planning to follow Renaults running in process of 3,500 rpm max for 625 miles, I am then going to extend the rev range up to 5,500 rpm until 1000 miles and then I am going to go to the fully syn, and gradually start to find the redline. I am then going to change the oil again at 6,000 miles and then every 6,000 miles after that...But I guess it is best to just either follow Renault's process or work out a system that you are happy with!

I know changing the oil to a fully syn at 1000 miles goes against what Steve has said, and I totally understand the theory behind keeping the bedding in oil in there, but at the same time I want my oil to be clean and to offer high performance so that is why I am going to change so early.

Those of you who visit "Cliosport" might of heard of a user called Oilman (Simon) - he has a few posts in the link in the first post.

I emailed him yesterday to ask what to do with a new trophy and he replied today saying that you should run the engine in using the original oil as its not a good idea to go to fully synthetic too quickly. Bearing in mind that this advice lost him a potential sale for now and that he sells specialist racing oils, I am comfortable to stay with the original oil and then semi-sythetic until at least the first official service at 12K.

He recommended the following fully synthetic oils for those of you with a few miles on the clock...

quote--- "Best quality are Silkolene PRO S 5w-40 or Motul 300V 5w-40 once it's run in"

There is plenty of technical data on the oils at: http://www.opieoils.co.uk/lubricants.htm

Yeah, done a bit of reading last night, and you boys are right, it is best to keep the running in oil or a semi-syn oil in the car for the full running process. Thanks for the information fellas! :D Saved me a few pennies in the short run, and maybe my engine in the long run!

Anyone know what the best semi-synthetic is to use (before the 12,000 service of course when the car will be run on fully synth sikolene pro s)?

Yeah I'm on about 8.5k is well. Was thinking I would have a semi synth oil change now to clean it out as its a year old, before my 12k service in about 6 months. I rang one dealer and they said they use elf 5w40 I think, but that's fully synth.

1. no oil is actually fully synthectic - there shouldn't be any trouble with what's labelled as Fully Synthectic.

2. 'Running in oil' as it's become known as shouldn't really last 12k. it's a lot thicker than say 5W40 and if it's darkening means that it's days are numbered - this usually should happen somewhere around the 2000-4000 miles mark (depends on use of the engine)

by keeping the oil in longer than that you'll actually be doing more long term damage than switching to a good synth oil like the silkolene. The particles of metal and carbon that an engine releases in the first year of it's life are what sets the tone for the engines future. Like drinking coke when your born in stead of milk.

Can of worms time....

I thought they cam with 10w in them, I have since been told by a couple of people that they come with 15w30 which i'm still a bit wary of (not sure if this is even a proper grade)

I'm fairly cirtain Reno wouldn't put 5w40 in them from new as their service dept. doesn't use 5w40 as standard, they normally go for 10w.

Confusion remains now - anyone know what is the truth?

Tried to do a bit of research into this when I first got my Trophy - http://cliotrophy.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=279

Had a response from both the R'sport "Panel of experts" and Jeremy Townsend who indicated that the Trophy was supplied from new with Elf Excellium 5W-40.

I've changed my oil twice from new, once at 4,000 and again at 8,000 using fully synthetic on both occasions and my Trophy runs fine (he says touching wood! ), made 146 bhp at the wheels about 500 miles after I had done the first oil change, which is pretty much bang on what it should be making.
