    Cracking/grating noise from rear suspension

Yesterday my trophy developed this dodgy noise on the way back home from work, it was a pop followed by a scraping/cracking noise of metal on metal. I have checked the rear suspension over pretty thoroughly, and can't find any problems! The only things that i haven't eliminated are the dampers...

    Trophy Cleaning Debate

I use various products, wash the car when possible(usually around once every few weeks to a month, which can cover over 2000 miles) but when i do wash it i do it properly and apply protection(sealant as it usually lasts far longer than wax) If i didn't do such a huge amount of miles, i'd apply...

    carbon bonnets.

Only worth it for an all out track car IMO I put one on my last track car, took the inner frame out too so it was just a carbon skin to cover the engine bay, had no heater etc. Bit out of place on a 182, unless it's that sort of car with a wrc style cage...

    Prices starting to stabilise finally...

I have no doubt the 197 is a more capable car, after driving two for two days on the 'scheif! But they're not as much fun 8)

    Prices starting to stabilise finally...

I've fallen out of love with my trophy, it's a moneypit! And has given me no end of hassle recently. I can't understand why a low mileage example will command a better price than a trophy with more miles but the major work done, the low mileage car will still need the work doing in the near...

    My Trophy on the Dyno!

Wheel reading is pretty good! Torque seems low though? I got 148.9lb/ft @ 5790 with totally standard engine! The chassis dyno only measures torque anyway and then calculates wheel BHP from that.

    New Purchase

Cool! A few of my mates have/had campers. One turbo'd the standard engine and it was quite an interesting drive, was quite reliable too!

Want to buy a Trophy, found one but...

If we all keep hold of ours then the value will stay high  Tractor it's not that similar, it has a much better oil system, more power and is more reliable, although the mi16 is alloy block so weighs less which benefits handling slightly.

Want to buy a Trophy, found one but...

The delayed smooth throttle response of the 197 gets to me, as does the revving for several seconds after you lift off, if you go to change gear at 7k, lift off and dip clutch it keeps revving up to the limiter at 7.5, so you have to wait a bit after lifting off to press the clutch, pretty much...

Want to buy a Trophy, found one but...

I spent two whole days driving a 197 round the ring in july last year, it's definitely a different animal, the trophy is more fun to drive but the 197 is much more civilised and i love the looks of the white ones with black optional alloys & cup suspension. Nearly bought one before i did all of...

Want to buy a Trophy, found one but...

52k, which puts people off, but i just use it for commuting i've treated it so well but a buyer wouldn't know that. I get 400 miles to most tanks of fuel, sometimes more, never less than 370! It's a shame really. I'm waiting until 197s plummet which they are in the process of doing. Eventually...

Want to buy a Trophy, found one but...

I put mine up at £6995 with cambelt, aux belt & dampers redone in last few k, new discs & pads all round uprated at front, high end audio & FF interior, and there wasn't that much interest :( If someone would give me £7500 for it i'd let it go, it's had £2k spent since i got it, and i paid...

Change your rear discs & bearings at 40k...

It's in the workshop manual. 175NM for the hub nuts. Undo 17mm nuts on pad carriers(leave calipers in situ) Undo 30mm hub nut Pull disc away by hand, retrieve seal from back of bearing. Rotate piston clockwise while pushing it in, screwdriver does fine for this, make sure you note how it was...

Change your rear discs & bearings at 40k...

I paid £140 for brand new renauit discs and pads from someone on here who didn't need them! So not a bad deal. Sure a trade account at renault would bring the price down to that sort of level! Also ktec do drilled rear discs with bearings for less, or there are usually mintex ones on ebay for a...

    Has anyone...?

I wouldn't fit a torque biasing diff for an everyday car that's used on back roads, it's tiresome being dragged all over the road. A plate type will be even worse.

Change your rear discs & bearings at 40k...

The discs & bearings are approx £130 from renault i think(the bearings alone should be half that, you'll need to get someone to press the old ones out and new in though), i had these sitting around waiting to be fitted for 6 months and after the re-deterioration of my cars handling recently i...

Change your rear discs & bearings at 40k...

I had read a blog from a team that races 172s and they had said that the rear wheel bearings were a consumable item and needed replacing pretty often. Yesterday i changed my rear brakes & bearings for brand new genuine renault bits, and also cleaned several tonnes of crap off the inside of my...

Un pinning dampers and top bearings

I would recommend replacing the adjusters and seals if unpinning. Ben, i doubt it would allow a noticeable amount more body roll, the springs & anti roll bars control the weight transfer mainly, the dampers are just there to control the springs. The gas pressure in the dampers does add to the...

Un pinning dampers and top bearings

Have you played with your settings ben? I drive the most awful roads in the UK on a daily basis and also the guy at BG said he thought the settings were very hard for road use. I'm probably going to have a play soon, a few clicks softer should increase front end grip by a measurable amount!

    Buying Guide for Trophy

Most of the problems are the same as other models. Check cambelt has been done early and by someone qualified. Check the front dampers, refurb is £500+ Front wishbone balljoints wear(common clio problem) Exhausts are utter crap, welds on cat crack, centre section baffles go, back box hangars...

    lower ball joint

You can get the seperately from renault, OEM Renault number: 7701468411. WIll say they are for a scenic but they are the same M12 holed ones IIRC. Don't blame me if i'm wrong though, i bought the whole wishbones and fitted them myself, cost about £90 i think. My car is on 50k though so i wanted...

If i ever catch the little Wa**ers

That's harsh, i'd definitely go through insurance as it'll need a new roof skin which is going to cost a lot, if they are even replaceable on clios? Trophys seem to attract bad attention, red isn't the most subtle of colours! Mine got keyed the week i got it round the back of my work in a quiet...

Drivers side trophy mirror or at least cap

Cheers Cue, i'll consider them in future! Ordered this one off ebay, as i need one ASAP, the federales probably wouldn't take well to me driving around with a plastic bag for a mirror for too long  http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0308299395 Appears to be capsicum red too...

I use autoglym interior shampoo, it's too weak to take stains out of the seatbelts or any other light fabric though.

    Poor Gear Change

It's not weighted enough really. French gearboxes always have and will be crap. I miss my 3 series, had a Z3 short shifter on, the transmission tunnel raises the gear shift mech up and it's in a perfect position, gear change is nicely weighted, precise, feels very positive and is very short...

    Fifth Gear R26r tonight

5th gear isn't really very good, wasn't really a review! I am getting an R26 next, had plenty of stripped caged cars now and the R26R doesn't appeal to me any more, especially when i have dedicated track cars anyway lol

    Yozzasport or Scorpion RS192 ??

I'd only ever get a BTB! Can't find anything else that looks respectable, the tailpipes on most aftermarket systems are too big imo!

    Cars good in the snow?

My saxo vts was brilliant in the snow, not enough low down power & torque to make it hard to modulate the throttle accurarely, no fly by wire crap either, the suspension geometry seems to suit snow driving much better too. I think the trophys just generally too hard, tyres too wide and fly by...
