Worse thing possible

Two weeks into trophy ownership and it's fair to say things haven't run smoothly:

I was driving today on an A road at a sensible 50mph speed, and suddenly my car lurched and came to a stop I am suspecting my cambelt has snapped even thought it was done at a reputable Renault Specialist in 2014 and hasn't covered much more than 12000 miles in that time. I am gutted until this is all confirmed next week I am not sure what best options I have. I haven't even had time to bond with the car and enjoy it yet! A huge part of me is saying to regretfully sell this as it is and let someone technical take it on but what an earth am i going to get back for a good condition Clio trophy with 88k going to fetch as a none runner?

Sorry to hear that mate :( I hope it's not as bad as you think. If the cambelt has let go then it might be worth sourcing a second-hand engine and dropping that in?

I’m not the most mechanical the Aa man said the crankshaft still goes up and down. No fault codes no oil leaks on the floor or anything.

Problem is sharky I wouldn’t know if the second hand engine was any good and it wasn’t going to happen again! I’ve checked on here and one person got lucky I’m just praying I’m the same it was driving so well etc :(

If you do get a replacement engine fitted, just make sure the belts are done on it.

Where in the world are you?

It's a terrible situation but it's recoverable, and I'd imagine you'll take more of a hit selling as is than you will sourcing and fitting a replacement F4R.

I’m based in Nottingham so I’m near mick at diamond motors. It’s the sheer cost that puts me off plus I just think I will be nervous driving it again now when it’s done. Will have to see what the verdict is and go from there. I’m favouring selling it off though.

Mine dropped 1 valve @ 106k miles. Either faulty hydraulic tappet or valve spring. Still cost a bit as replaced all inlet valve springs as a precaution (& a set of 8 inlet valves)!
Isn't always a common fault if you're lucky

Car was pulling fine though and felt really tight and good! The car just lurched quite violently which makes me think it’s the cambelt that’s gone and all power just went like that.

There is always a bit of a risk but you can find engines with known history and get the belts and work sorted by the likes of Mick at Diamond Motors. It's not cheap but I think it's worthwhile on a Trophy that is in otherwise good condition. Fingers crossed - as Claude states, this is very much a salvageable situation provided your ownership experience hasn't been tainted too harshly.

The car needs a totally new engine I am totally gutted it's had a bottom end failure and has blown the engine in to bits. I am probably going to be selling as spares and repairs. Bodywork is good, has had a new genuine clutch fitted, everything is original, wheels recently refurbished. 4 good condition Yokohama tyres. What can I expect to get for it?

How much would second hand engine usually go for?

Is there any differences between the engine in the Trophy and any of the other Clio models like Clio Cup etc?

If you can get an engine for a decent price that might be the best option but I can see your really gutted by the whole thing and I wouldn't blame you!!

If I had space,, and the time ide be making you an offer,,,,,, but I have neither...
Has the previous owner tracked the car at all..??

That is a pisser mate.

Pure motorsport sell brand new heads and bottom ends.. spending on how perfect an engine you might want to drop in.

Hmm if my two car gargae comes off..

Same engine in all 182's mate. You can even drop a 172 lump in as they are 99.9% the same and will offer the same power output.

Is it just the crank/rods or is the block holed or permently damaged too and have you got a price in mind for it as it is?

I’ve tried staying off this as I’m that upset. Thanks for the support though I appreciate it. I have decided to sorn the car and cancel my insurance. The oil level was fine and coolant level was fine, in fact the car was pulling great etc and under the previous owner had just completed a trip back from Holland! It dropped a valve at 50mph in fifth gear which in turn I believe has punctured the engine block. I do think at this moment I will sell it as a complete car just minus an engine but the engine can go with it in bits, but I need to do some workings out to which is best. My main problem is I haven’t bonded with the car yet and chucking money at it makes me ill. Phil if you PM me what you’re thinking and we can go from there. The car in question is in the advertised section as I’ve not long bought it the reg number is FY55 WZH, cheers.
