Hi everyone,

I need some help/advice please to try and identify a noise…..

I have a whistling/purring coming from the driver side of engine, front front left, half way down block near the pulleys. It doesn’t seem to be the belts or pulley. The noise does vary with rpm.

With whistle video

Without whistle/purring

I haven’t heard this noise on any other 182 before, I’ve attached another video for reference.

Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Martin

I had a noise in the same area and it turned out to be the power steering pump but that had more of a whistling noise and not as noisy. It could be the dephaser because ive heard they make alot of noise when on the way out. As to how the dephaser sounds I have no idea because ive not heard 1 that needs changing.

I think power steering is a good shout, as noise dips on rev and there is vibration through the steering wheel at low speed.. thank you

Have you Checked your power steering level, mine sounded awful during test drive m. When I got it home it was running almost empty.

There is a slight chugging/tractor noise I can hear, this could be early signs of dephaser, Has it had a replacement?

Mine is originally from what I can see at 70k and is making g the same noise, I’ve sourced a new repair for £112 and will be getting it changed during the cam belt for peace of mind.

thanks for the replies/help. The noise doesn’t vary with steering input and fluid is full. Dephaser and belts were done in 2024, I think the chugging with a ticking is an exhaust manifold leak. The pcv valve is also leaking which, which could also be causing the problem (oil may have been overfilled). Luckily no white smoke or signs of blown head gasket.
