Well as you must know, if you want a driver buy a cheap one with as you say a budget for problems. You won’t be scared about the miles/perceived value then.

Cheap ones howvere are hard to
Come buy these days due to the current price hikes.

Higher miles but well maintained would be the best bet to get good value.

Values still have plenty of time to creep up I'd say. I bought mine for £5k at 78k miles, it's now on just over 99k and I think I could get the same back for it.

I think a decent Trophy is almost at the stage where the old saying "it's only worth what someone is willing to pay" could be replaced by "it's worth what an owner is willing to sell it for".

If you want to drive the thing I can see little point buying a low mileage example. The higher prices are directly linked to the mileage. If you paid top money for a 10k mile car you could never drive it without hurting your investment. Trophy’s will no doubt increase in value over the years but they’re no Escort Cosworth - not enough people know or appreciate what they are. I paid good money for mine as I will never sell it and doubt it’ll ever be worth less than I paid. If you’re looking for a car that won’t lose you money, even if you use it, £6000 to £7500 for a 70k to 100k mile car with a good history is a safe bet.

I somehow knew a few posts back that this thread would get interesting.

In respect of sale price, my car has done 70k but with the condition of it and the money spent on it if I had to accept £6-£6.5k as per the new found spread sheet value I would set it on fire first.

Saying a Trophy is worth x amount because it has done x miles is nonsense. There are far more other factors which would inform a buyers and sellers judgement on the “value” of a car.

Totally true and the exact same scenario with E46 M3's. Some low mileage cars still need thousands spent on them. I'd rather have a well sorted car regardless of the mileage but I guess low mileage clouds peoples judgement as they are always seen as the better buy.

Hi all. Just resuscitating this thread rather than starting a new one.

Been a while since being on here! Sadly, about as long as the last time I drove #300.

A couple of years ago I moved away for work and had to leave the car behind where it’s been in storage (in a soft shell cover) ever since. As it looks like I won’t be returning any time soon, it’s begrudgingly time to think about what to do with it.

The car has a good story – it was a prereg car then purchased by a lifelong friend who owned it until 2015. I purchased it from him then with a mileage of roughly 35500. It had only been irregularly used since about 2009 covering only roughly 1000 miles per year over six years but was stored inside in a lovely warehouse throughout. It was in great condition when I took it on but my idea was to completely refresh it. The plan was to always sell it back to him eventually, but sadly that hasn’t transpired.

it is detailed above but as a reminder:

As soon as I took the car on I spent a lot on it and I have a Trophy folder from a group buy on here containing all receipts from about 2012 including all of the ones I paid for between October 2015 and end-2017. This includes new Miltek exhaust and brackets (the only non-stock item but it’s great), servicing, spark plugs, cambelt and water pump, steering wheel column replacement, Sachs damper refurb (BG), spare cup dampers, full alloy refurb (by DMC Newbury – incredible job) new floor mats and much more. No expense was spared – it was my pride and joy. All work was undertaken by Mick at Diamond Motors – nobody else was allowed to touch it! When I sadly put it into storage it had roughly 47500 on the clock.

I purchased the car from my friend without the service book as unfortunately he lost it. Renault weren’t helpful in providing a new one but there’s plenty of history online and ultimately the car has been looked after by the best and has had so much spent on it that it never concerned me. There’s also just the one key.

The car is in really good condition. The alloys are immaculate (pretty much brand new), it’s always been kept in its cover even when in daily use and never parked on the street which has really helped to protect it and the colour. Refurbed Sachs have only covered about 6000 miles. Non smoker. There are only two things I never got around to doing; replacing all four tyres (currently running on 1 x Michelin PS2, 2 x PS3 and 1 x can’t remember!) and replacing a washer blank from the front.

I love this car and it pains me to see it go, but life moves on. Currently the car battery is dead and it won’t start so it needs a service before going anywhere. A few questions:

Do you guys recommend I get it serviced and up and running before selling or just sell as is?
What sort of price should I be aiming for beyond the ‘it’s worth what someone is willing to pay for it’?
What’s the best time of year to sell?

With a major service and new battery this is one of the best Trophy’s around. With that and four new tyres it’ll be a dream. Under 50000 miles, receipts galore, no expense spared, stored inside and under cover and never tracked.

Any insight appreciated as I am well out of the Trophy loop these days.

Many thanks for your help.

Sound like it's going to be almost box fresh so should command a strong price - prices have steadily risen over the last few years and with sub 50k on the clock and without seeing it in the flesh, the bills etc in total i'd be estimating anywhere between £8.5k to £10k....

Thank you, Cue. Had a couple of messages at a similar point. Interested to see what people say over the next few days as I admittedly haven’t focussed on values since putting it away. I’ll miss it and just hope the next person drives it and takes care of it.

Well just make sure your not lowballed after that comment ?.. those miles the dealers will be sniffing with immediate cash telling you it’s a tough market and reality it’s a £6k car

Looks like there’s a couple on eBay which would indicate somewhere within Cue’s number.

Some pictures following several (understandable) requests - some of these are from pre-storage but all interior (+ garage shot) are as of yesterday. As you can see - very well loved.

Hi everyone. Just throwing this back open, I had planned to get it back on the road in the Spring but I am open to offers if anyone wants to take it off my hands.

Nothing has changed since my post above in November 19, the car has been rolled every so often as the battery is totally flat but still remains in place and under the cover. It had an examination from a well known Renault specialist earlier this year who was stunned by its excellent condition. It needs some money spending on it (full service, Sachs refurb for a start) but once this is complete it’ll be one of the very best on the road. God I love this car and I’m so torn as to what to do with it!

I love my 172, and replace any part that might conceivably fail before it does.

Then I drive it, every day,

Im sorry to see that you have made the decision to let her go but it’s a shame the car hasn’t been used for so long.
Looking forward to seeing the new owner bringing a very low mileage car back out in the open.
