I bought mine after a lot of umming and ahhing over what I really wanted out of a car. In the end, I wanted a fun, usable modern classic. I literally Googled this phrase!

On almost all of the lists I found, there was a Trophy.

I was considering a 6.2 C63, but I thought the running costs would be exorbitant, and the Clio would be peanuts relatively.

I was quite wrong on that front...

In two years I've needed a replacement engine (thanks to a bad non-OEM Febi thermostat), discs, pads, wheel bearings, brake piston kit, radiator, condensor. Whilst the engine was being replaced I had all the usual items sorted (clutch, belts etc).

I'm about to refurb the Sachs, wishbones, tyres and wheels.

These really are not the cheapest things to maintain in good order, especially as you get them to this age. And I bought mine in good condition from a very nice forum member.

But....

Get on a great B-road, in a sorted car, and there will be very, very little that will make you grin more than these pocket rockets!

Best of luck with your searching!
Very nicely put James. 😁👍

I picked one up quite cheaply last year, and it's not been without its quirks. It was pretty scabby underneath, the brakes were shot, the brake lines were leaking, the suspension needed refreshing, the alarm has a mind of its own, and bits of interior trim need replacing.

So far, I've replaced the suspension, brakes, brake lines, radiator, condenser, water pump, belts, bushes, wishbones, and rear axle due to rust. To be honest, it still needs a new bonnet, interior trim needs to be refitted and a full respray as every panel is scratched.

Despite its faults, I love it and get a lot of enjoyment from restoring it. For the amount it'll cost by the end, I could've bought a museum-quality example, but that's not the point of owning a modern classic (for me). Knowing that I've saved a car and being certain the work has been done to a standard I'm happy with is worth more to me.

It's crazy Mike how things just get out of control when you start isn't it - and like yourself my journey too was so rewarding in keeping another special little car on the road.

Another thing to add is without this Forum I'd say most car's would not stand a chance - the knowledge and help is gives is outstanding from members praising other vehicles - this definitely then help's with the movtivation to carry on and keep spending.

After reading my post again, I've probably made the car sound worse than it was. I didn't need to replace the rusty parts or the front suspension but the bug to make it perfect has hit me very hard. It was a tad scruffy but definitely a usable daily.

The car puts such a massive smile on my face and as it's got my son into cars it will become something we work on together

Hi @adrians1302 , have you considered this car? For sale by forum member @ocsltd:

This looks to me like a nice example. I appreciate it’s perhaps higher than your suggested budget. But buying a car with all the bits on is far less of a hassle than trying to find missing parts and reinstate them - as I said in my DM a few days ago. Hope your search is going well in any case.

Thanks Ed. I suspect it's more than he's willing to pay, which is fair enough. You are right though! :)
