Trophy doesn't drive as good as I though it would!

I was expecting the Trophy to blow me away with it's handling, but tbh my 172 cup on twice the mileage (ish) drives much better! Ok my cup has new shocks, sportlines, poly bushed to the nines & has a rarb & solid mounts/brace.

The Trophy is on just 39k, Sach's have never been done & only mod is k-Tek solid top mounts & cat back.

I'd like to keep it as standard as possible, but what can I do to make it drive like it should!? I plan on having the Sach's refurbished & de pinned.

I've also got a nasty knock which sounds like top mounts, we've had her up on the ramp but can't find anything loose.

Any idea's would be fab!

i have seen quite a few people say, the 172 cup is a better drive, i think you might be expecting too much from it, it is only a clio after all.

if the SACH have not been done to you knowledge, you should leave them well alone, they could keep going for years, a refurb could last months. As i said in your other post i would recommend the Mark Fish Springs, and adjustable rear dampers, powerflex do upper mounts for the rear dampers, yours will be getting a bit old now.

When does it knock the most, when my front top mounts failed (not solid mount), it mostly noticeable when going around bends ect. the Ktec ones are very noisey though, quite clicky, which was ehy i went with PMS, If you want to uprated the top mounts, PMS and brace are very good

The modifications you have made to the Clio 172 cup are the best you can make to a Clio in my opinion,they will transform the feel and handling,they would also do the same to your trophy which after all is a road car with 11 year old bushes and dampers and springs,get the dampers done and polybush it throughout and see if this helps you,did with mine and it's on 110k now

Cheers boys, it knocks/clunks on bumpy roads but not especially going around corners.

I'd love to do what I've done to the cup but wouldn't that de value it? From our eyes its sharpening it up but a collector may think it's 'molested' , after all I have bought her to add to my RS collection/investment toy.

The Trophy has had many plaudits since it's launch. If it not to your liking perhaps it might be a good idea to have a qualified mechanic inspect it.

thats what my ktec mounts were like, they were on the car when i got it, might have needed a refurb? like yours might, but i would 110% treat to the full PMS kit

Yeah my Pms one's are spot on, best bit of kit I got for the cup.

Would they fit the same as my current k-tek? (drilled holes) oh & they were only fitted in 2013 on around 28k!

Are the Sachs OK? My car knocked like crazy and didn't handle well when I first purchased it. When I took the Sachs off for a returb and fitted standard dampers, I realised how knackered they were.

Hi Dawn,
I would do the wishbones for starters. Realtivly "cheap" parts and you get new bushes and ball join as part of the kit. Will deffinately help tighten things up on either of your cars.

I know my 182 non cup was transfromerd on new standrd shocks. As was the sharpness of my Trophy when i refreashed the front end.

I find there is a smoohtness to the sachs compared to my old car.

Also the KTEC solid top mounts are utter f**king garbage, they knock and bang like crazy over rough tarmac and don't tend to play well with different spring setups, my advice chuck them well and truly in the bin where they belong and replace with the PMS STM/Strut Brace combo, the holes are pretty much the same spacing just need widening by about 1mm to accomdate.

To compare a 172 Cup which has had a huge refresh of handling-impacting components to a Trophy which hasn't will only give one result.

Doing a similar front-end refresh on the Trophy including track rods, track rod ends, wishbones, lower ball joints, ARB bushes and steering rack bushes will 'transform' it, even using OEM.

Changing the top mounts to Pure, fitting a RARB if that's what you're into, and maybe even changing boots if they're also 11 years old will push the envelope further still.

In general, is going from a 172 Cup to a 182 Trophy ever going to blow anyone away? I would imagine the differences would be much more subtle than going from the Cup to a Meg 230, for example, it's not like the 172 was a poor handing car in the first place.

Tbh I actually think my friend Zains 172 Cup drives way nicer than any of the Trophys I've ever driven, if and when i return to Clio ownership it will be the one I get!
