Hello Folks,

Aug 2012, at 23 years old, is when I first owned a Clio Trophy, specifically number #196:

OriginalOwnership.png

Seven months later, I sold the Trophy on 61,000 miles for £5,250 due to being offered a company car and still being early on in my career, I couldn’t justify keeping both. The car was absolutely immaculate and I regretted selling it immediately, but I was equally delighted to see that #196 went on to be a fairly famous and well-maintained car, even into its high-mileage years.

I’ve had many motors since, and have been lucky enough to own some of my bucket-list cars but it has to be said, I’ve never had the exact same feeling as I had owning the Trophy. It’s difficult to understand exactly why as objectively, I’ve owned better/faster cars but there is something special about that little Trophy - and I’ve always wanted to own one again.

I’m fortunate enough to currently be driving a first-generation Audi R8 V10+. Spec includes Audi exclusive interior w/ wingbacks & carbon fibre/alcantara, carbon ceramics, aftermarket Larini exhaust and running roughly around 550Bhp:

R8Collage.jpeg

You can watch Misha Charoudin take my R8 around the Nurburgring Nordschleife and do 140mph+ in torrential rain. What an experience that was.

I’ve been considering getting a second car for a while in order to reduce unnecessary miles on the R8, which at some point, I will sell because it’s a lot of capital to have tied up in a depreciating asset. When that time comes, I still want to have something that is fairly economical and that I could still enjoy on a b-road/the odd trackday. After fighting heart vs head, I rejected getting something very sensible (and boring) in favour of buying another Trophy to re-live my nostalgia.

Almost serendipitously, a Trophy with two previous owners and 47,000 on the clock popped up on Autotrader one morning. I called up and put a deposit down, and collected last weekend:

TrophyMileageReport.png

It might sound strange that although I’d done some research on the car, it didn’t occur to me until 1 am the night before collecting the car that it was number #197 of 500. I was about to own the consecutive numbered Clio Trophy to the one I'd owned in 2012! I’d be interested to know if anybody else has been able to do similar. I’m sure the chances are slim, but hey-ho, clearly some things are meant to be!

I drove it home whilst having the England v Spain Euro Final on in the background, and even the disappointment of the loss couldn’t remove the smile of being back in a Trophy after many years.

Overall, the car is in great condition but needs the odd bit of work to restore, which I will undertake. Although relatively low mileage, it won’t be a garage queen. I plan to restore fully, enjoy driving and add a few choice upgrades here and there.

It’s booked into Rentech next week to be fully checked and have a few niggles sorted to ensure it’s A+.

I’ll keep this thread up to date with the progress on the car.

Thanks for reading!

Yes, welcome back! Your T looks very tidy - great find. Are the alloys darker than standard or perhaps just the light levels?

Well spotted - The trader who sold the car actually refurbed the wheels in a slightly darker colour. I'm not entirely sure why, but it is something I'll rectify in the near future!

Finally getting around to posting an update since buying the Trophy and this might be a longer one. It’s safe to say, my wallet certainly isn’t thanking me for my nostalgic car purchase...

RentechFirstVisit.png

The car had a few issues that needed sorting:

  • Knocking noise coming from the nearside front when going over bumps
  • Previous recent MOTs showed an oil leak
  • Cabin electrics issues with cruise control, radio, and some dash lights not working correctly
  • Windscreen washers front and rear not working
  • AC needed regassing
  • Font brake discs heavily worn
  • I also asked for an overall health check for peace of mind

There is zero evidence of the car being abused, but it had been sat for long periods so a number of these niggly issues have no doubt been the result of that.

I took the car 2 hours to Mike @ Rentech in Portsmouth. I’d used Rentech in the past when I owned #196, and Mike is legit in his knowledge of Renault Sport cars.

Rather than just replacing the worn discs, I took the opportunity to have the brakes upgraded for fast road/track with Brembo High Carbon Max grooved discs, HEL braided lines, ATE Superblue 200 and Ferodo DS2500 pads.

Mike fixed all issues bar the cruise control which very oddly has the steering wheel switches wired the wrong way around. It’s still the original steering wheel, and from other stories I’ve read, it is likely one of those French manufacturing quirks/anomalies of the period when it comes to the right-hand drive 182s.

The oil leak was minor and turned out to be a leaking power steering pressure switch.

Mike initially diagnosed the nearside knocking noise as a symptom of the Sachs dampers being in desperate need of a refurb (the original wax seals from the factory were still in place indicating that the dampers had not been serviced since new), so off to BG Motorsport they went. I had the full works including stripping the dampers, outer struts power coated, shafts replaced, new adjusters and the dampers fully rebuilt.

Props to Mike for his patience and for keeping the car (on donor dampers) for a few weeks while the refurb was being completed.

The bill:

Dampers = £1,476
Brake Upgrades = £420.91
Rentech Bill (labour and parts for all other issues) = £786.02

Total = 2,682.93 😳

To top it off, I drove the little Trophy home from Portsmouth back to Bristol with it now knocking on the offside and also the nearside arch liner coming loose and dragging along causing it to get damaged 🤣

Archliner.jpg

Mike did warn me before I collected the car that the knocking noise hadn't been completely cured by the damper refurb, and it had now moved from nearside to offside but he ran out of time to investigate it further before I collected. With all that being said, the dampers needed to be sorted as it was clear to the eye they weren't rebounding as they should.

As for the trim, already damaged? Freak accident? Fitment issue? Who knows. Mike offered to sort it but I wasn't bothered enough to go all the way back to Portsmouth.

Fortunately, RD Motorworx is not too far from me and Marcus, the owner, is pretty gifted when it comes to performance hot hatches. Marcus diagnosed the knocking as a knackered top mount and this thread was very helpful in sourcing a replacement at a fraction of the cost if it were direct from Renault. Although the thread alludes to some modification being required (even with OEM) it didn't turn out to be the case for me at least.

Finally, no more knocking :)

As for the arch lining, the damaged nearside was easy enough to source new and replace, but the offside was completely absent and had been for some time and (for some reason unbeknownst to me) is rarer than rocking horse sh*t.

RDMotorworxTMAL.png

As a temporary measure, I sourced a standard non-RS offside arch lining and Marcus modified it to fit. In recent weeks, I've actually managed to source the correct 182 part second-hand on eBay so I'll get it fitted soon.

The bill:

Arch liners (parts and labour) = £217.01
Top mounts (parts and labour) = £168

Total to date = £3,067.94

On the plus side, it flew through the MOT!

I've got no issue with being transparent about it. As always with older cars (even lower mileage ones), you run the risk of incurring unexpected costs after purchase. I probably paid slightly under the market rate for the car itself, but any savings I did make have been diminished (and then some) with what I've had to pay to restore the car to a good baseline. I don't plan to sell any time soon, and my OCD wouldn't allow me to do it any differently.

The relatively low-mileage Trophy is finally getting the love it deserves. I'll take the hit and move on to the more exciting stuff next.

Castle Combe booked for June and a Nurburgring trip in the works. A few upgrades to do before then.

Wow that was a big bill. Great to see though.

The car will hopefully now see you with years or joyful motoring

I'm surprised Mike couldn't diagnose the top mount fault.

Not to bad mouth mike too much but I used to use him when I had 182s until change of staff and the lack of communication, arriving to a bigger bill than expected put me off.

I recommend aw motorworks.

Great update. It's always interesting to see some costs too.

I was also surprised that the top mounts weren't replaced for new when your refurbed dampers were refitted, but glad you got the 'knock' sorted in any case.

Nice to see another Trophy getting some tic, and I hope you enjoy the car on the track action you're planning.

Thanks @sj2112 for the comment and for sharing your experience with Rentech.

I omitted some details from the post for the sake of brevity that I probably should have included to paint a more complete picture. I already suspected it could be a top-mount issue and the car came with some spares, including extra modified top mounts. Mike certainly did initially diagnose the knocking as potentially being a nearside damper issue, but I asked him to fit the spare top mounts as a precaution when putting the car back together.

Later turns out that one of those spare top mounts had seized and wasn't working correctly, and that's why there was now a noise on the offside.

Very difficult to know if that initial nearside knocking was in fact the damper or the original top mounts as both were ultimately refurbed/replaced.

Another point to mention is when RD Motorworx looked at the car, their initial assessment was also that the noise sounded like it was coming directly from the damper (although now on the different side). It was only when they pulled it all apart properly, that they found it was the top mount that had seized so their initial thinking was along the same lines as Mike, until they looked into it further.

So with all that being said, I do try to give people the benefit of the doubt and overall my experience of Rentech over the years has been good for the most part. Cost-wise they seem fairly competitive to me, at least when I compare them to previous invoices for work on the Clio from the likes of twotechs.co.uk for the big cambelt/dephaser pulley work.

Relatively speaking, it's all obviously cheaper than having work done on the R8 which makes you want to go and sit in a dark room and cry for a week afterwards 🤣

Great update. It's always interesting to see some costs too.

Thanks @photo_ed looking forward to getting it on track and really seeing what the little Trophy can do 😎

Hi - what tyres are you running?

@marrow the car is on Toyo Proxes TR1 tyres that were fitted by the previous owner just before I bought it. I've only really run Michelin Pilot Sport on my cars in the past, so I'll probably end up going to PS3s when the Toyo's need changing, but for now, they seem to be performing reasonably well.

Lovely to see the updates and upgrades!

If you join the 172/182 forums on Facebook there are often people breaking them, I picked up a rear genuine offside wheel arch trim for £20 as mine was split, along with some other missing clips etc. Bloody bargain!

Another quick update. Purchased a spare steering wheel that I had retrimmed by Royal Steering Wheels.

The original was actually in pretty good condition and I'd like to keep that way but I also don't find the external style grips that comfortable when driving:

OriginalSteeringWheel.jpeg

The new wheel was retrimmed with smooth leather top/bottom, perforated leather left/right, thumb grips rebuilt to be internal and Silver 412 stitching to match silver interior trim parts:

ClioRoyalSteeringWheel.JPG

I absolutely love it. It's excellent quality, doesn't look out of place in the car and makes driving more enjoyable. Although photos show a slightly different colour from the airbag and dash, it's barely noticeable in real life.

Fitting it has also fixed the cruise control issues as the switches have clearly been wired around the correct way on this wheel!

For anyone interested, the wheel retirm cost was £214.99, and I supplied the spare steering wheel which I paid £40 for.

I also fitted a new head unit. Living out my childhood Fast and Furious vibes with the Pioneer AVH-Z7200DAB flip-up double din:

ClioPioneerHeadunit.JPG

I'm not really a fan of the look, or it partly covering the vents but I can't live without Android Auto these days. I'd love a decent single DIN option even though you sacrifice screen real estate which makes reading maps/waze harder, but it looks much better IMHO. Something similar to the Porsche Classic option would be ideal, but nobody else seems to have made one:

PorscheSingleDIN.jpg

Hopefully one of the big aftermarket stereo brands will build something similar in the future.

Congrats on coming back to Trophy ownership. #197 looks terrific and it'll only get better with all your fettling.

Can i ask where you sourced the new arch liners from?

Thanks!

I got the Nearside arch liner from Renault Parts Direct for £85, Offside was second-hand on eBay for £30. One clip is broken that needs fixing, but should be easy enough.
