Hello

I'm afraid my 182 Trophy has dropped a valve and I need to find a replacement engine. The car is only on 54,000 miles and i'd like an engine with similar miles or lower.

Does anyone know a good place to buy an engine?

Cheers

I guess it would depend on price. Ideally a rebuilt one with a warranty but if the price is massively higher than a 2nd hand one which I presume it would be then I guess it's not worth it!

Is it common for them to drop a valve? The car is standard with fairly low miles, I've not heard of it but i'm no expert!

i think you would be looking at £4-500 for low ish mileage one, should think a recon engine would be £1200+, not sure what the cost new from renault, and £500+ for fitting

I thought it would be more expensive for a recon engine, that might be worth considering!

Here are some pics incase anyone in interested or could suggest the cause of failure? I'm guessing a weak, faulty valve that's just taken until now to fail?

Pure motorsport have brand new heads and short blocks.. They split new units for sale.. Think it's approx £1k head and 1.5k short block..Might do you a same price pre splitting.

Cheers dab, I think the bottom end isn't great either, new engine needed. If I need both then it would end up quite costly!

Sorry to hear that mate. I hope you can find a good replacement engine that doesn't hit the wallet too hard!

Just make sure he doesn't offer my engine as a replacement! I've been waiting a long time for it!

I'm up in the north of scotland too which makes it harder to get one!

Sharky, I could always make sure it works for you.....................

It seems a strange one Patrick, but it's happened lol.

From what I've read over on ClioSport the valves dropping on these engines is usually what does for them (or a belt jumping off). The guys that write all the engine build threads usually seem to discuss replacing the standard valves with uprated ones. They become brittle where they transition from the shaft to the valve seat. People that run maps with overrun (pop and bang map) seem to have issues with dropping values too.

The belt didn't jump, it was replaced 4000 miles or so ago but the belt was still intact. That's interesting though, sounds like i'm not the only one although the engine was standard!

Good to see the topic in the right section now ;)

Nice try buddy... :)

Joking aside, good luck with sourcing a replacement.

As mentioned above, valves dropping does happen on these engines (more so on cars that have been modified yet retained standard valves). The valves tend not to cope well with elevated (above stock) rev limits and modifications that can significantly raise the exhaust gas temperatures. On standard engines it is rare to see failures like this :(

To err on the side of safety a potential option is to go for something like Supertec valves (which are by far the most common valve upgrade for those modifying or who want that extra bit of security). They aren't cheap but it's possibly worthy of consideration at least.

The engine on ebay with 56,000 miles says 172/182 engine. Are they just the same engine but with different manifolds?

Can I asked what decision was made on this engine ? No. 110 is for sale in Birmingham at R-Performance here https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RENAULT-...770331?hash=item41e17a69db:g:fIMAAOSwZ~ha13B5 where he also has No. 91 unless he is getting the numbers confused.

Your car (110) was EJ05 YPP ???

It says this car has 54K miles which is correct by the MOT history, but another for sale post on here by you had it at 58K miles ? Just wondered if the engine got replaced or rebuilt and if the mileage of 58K is the engine or not ?

Interested in the car potentially.

My bad - I think this was number 91 ... the seller is sending me information on two cars he has on Ebay and trying to marry up the numbers and mileage etc.
