Picked the car up today after getting the timing belt and a load of work done and there's an obvious rattle coming from it now, almost sounds like something's loose to me-

That sound like anything in particular to anyone's ears? I noticed something within about 10 mins of driving away but didn't know what it was related to and I'd travelled 2 hours to pick it up after a month so wasn't inclined to turn back on a Saturday!

Had I similar rattle on my racing blue 182.
The fuel rail protector wasn’t tightened up.
This would have been removed to carry out the works.
It’s held on by 2 x 10mm nuts. You will need a deep reach socket.

No luck, there's no movement in the guard.

Heat shield would be absolute best case but the luck I've had with cars lately makes me think a pulley or bearing in something.

The subframe has been dropped and most of the front suspension has been replaced, is there a heat shield that would have needed removed for that?

There is a heat shield protecting the starter motor from the manifold, but I see no reason why this would be rattling

There is also a heatsheild on the steering rack which I think is attached to the subframe.

Fingers crossed.

Very hard to determine exactly where it's coming from whether I listen at the engine bay or on the ground to the side of the car.

On it potentially being a heat shield- would it be normal for when this occurs to change depending on temperature etc.? Today it doesn't seem to be doing it much at idle as in the videos but was more noticeable when accelerating around town between ~2000-3000rpm.

The heat shield rattle is usually affected by the harmonics of the car as the revs rise & fall, mine used to rattle particularly off throttle at fairly low urban type speeds. Just look / reach underneath in the area just forward of the rear beam. Where the middle section meets the one on the boot floor, it’s usually pretty easy to see/feel if it’s worked loose.

I'm not saying they caused it, but can you not take it back to where you had the work done for them to check it?

Yes of course and that is the plan as a worst case scenario, they are aware and have no hesitation about taking it back but it's a 4 hour round trip for me and a write-off of a Saturday.

Ideally I'll get my local guy to have a look first on the assumption it is something easy.

My other car has just developed a coolant leak so I need something to stay mobile, that's 20 year old cars for you!
