I've contacted a few more folk on my list now regarding the last new damper. I'm going to go 1st come - 1st served on it now I think.

It's a great opportunity really, many of these dampers are going to be unrepairable in time, and major parts are really no longer available even from Sachs. This isn't just hearsay or scaremongering, I had 1st hand experience of this back in 2021 with damper rebuilds where myself and BG Motorsport had a wrangle with Sachs over some internal parts. We were not able to source them as they no longer exist, Sachs haven't held parts stock for a long time, and they certainly were not willing to remanufacture or let any technical details out for 3rd party remanufacture.

Also, outer body spring platforms. These are failing now due to extensive corrosion, I see it quite regularly, I have a pair of dampers in the workshop which are essentially scrap due to this. Why pay £500 to weld in new metal on old bodies when you can buy a whole brand new damper unit with all the other parts in situ for £622?

Hi Ed - I spoke with BG very recently and they confirmed they have all parts except the damper body - the bit that rusts.

Well, they couldn't source inner shaft tubes for me back in '21 Mark.... or are you trying to suggest I'm telling fibs?

I can let you have copies of the emails if you like, though I find your suggestion slightly insulting to be fair. I try my best for this forum and it's members.

I was lucky that @hoolio could supply me with a spare pair of dampers for BG to strip for the parts needed which were unobtainable from Sachs themselves.

Maybe, like myself, BG have since then obtained more parts from somewhere in the last 4 years. Could be the case I suppose.

Hi Ed - following your email above, I've just spoken with Jane at BG who once again confirmed they have EVERY part (including shafts) except the damper body. If you doubt me, feel free to call her. Mark

Well, that's great news Mark.

I really wish that had been the case back in 2021, as it would have saved me considerable expense and messing about.

I still get the sense from your tone that it feels like you're trying to suggest I'm trying to dupe or mislead people, which I really don't like or appreciate Mark. I have gone above and beyond with some of the stuff I've done for this forum, I have learned a lesson though and will think twice in future before engaging in any more parts sourcing exercises.

I am tempted to ring Jane, but I'm happy to take your word on the matter.

I think if it was me in need I'd snap Ed's hand off at £622 for a new unit - then send my other side for refurb to make a pair if BG are confident they have the parts, with them not having the body's make's the above seem more like a bargin though - also could you imagine If these where full set's at £1244 this tread would have been lit up like a Christmas tree.

New damper or a refurb that could still look like the below, and probably more cost - no brainer to me.
