Hi all,
After coming very close to buying one years ago, ended up buying a Impreza STI RA V3 but after destroying my daily on Friday in a crash (everyone ok šŸ™).
So Im in the market for one of the most special hot hatches ever.
What should I be looking for as seen some with the Sach suspension not in the car, is everything available to get it rebuilt and how much would it roughly cost.
My plan is to run this as my Daily driver for the next few years before moving it to weekend duty.

Thanks
Vincent

Hi Vincent

Sorry for us seeming to be a rude lot and not replying to your questions

The Sachs are a really important part for the Trophy and itā€™s getting harder to have them overhauled - Iā€™ve not got any experience on refurbishing them / pricing however Iā€™d try to find a vehicle which has had them
done within a two year window - if your going to use all year round Iā€™d recommend replacing the frontā€™s over the winter with the 60mm cup shocks -

With most parts becoming obsolete now due to its 20yr old age try and find the best you can get for your budget - as in my experience thereā€™s not really a massive market difference between a fully sorted car and a car that could easily eat 10k -

I hope you get lucky with your search and welcome to the forum - Iā€™d also say keep checking here and Facebook as most bargains are posted - also read the comments just to give you a heads up on previous spend

Ps @photo_ed has a massive hoard of parts and magazines if you ever need anything šŸ¤”

Cheers Nick

Hi Vincent, shame as there was a cracker for sale only a week agoā€¦. With sensible miles for a very sensible price.
But, as I have learnt with buying many cars over the yearsā€¦.. the saying goesā€¦
ā€œThere will be another oneā€
Although, with the trophy they are getting a little harder to find.
There was someone on the Facebook group a few weeks agoā€¦. They said they might have one coming up soon.
Best regards, Andrew

I assume the salt and such is horrible for them in the winter. For those days I just take the Impreza as just nearly finished a full rebuild on the removing so much rust.
Are BG Motorsport still available to rebuild them as what makes a Trophy special is those dampers. Just trying to figure out what are the pitfalls prior to jumping.
And no worry about slow replies, we are all busy with lives.

Ive been thinking of getting one for years but wrote off my daily driver on Friday, everyone was ok but car is destroyed.
So ran though options of what to get and Trophy is just top of the list.
Should have a hire car for a few weeks to tide me over and frantically trying to sort out money at the moment so I can jump on a nice one if it pops up.

Welcome to the forum Vincent.

I'm not sure I've got much to add to what's been said already, the Sachs, as others have said, are key to the car really, but it's sensible to budget for refurbishment (usually around Ā£1k with BG) of them at some stage. It's a near 20 year old car now, so certain parts are becoming increasingly difficult to source and/or quite expensive. Though a few folk still continue to daily them, I personally wouldn't, what with the parts scarcity, the Sachs spring platforms not liking winter salt and the increasing issues with corrosion generally on components and bodyshells . For me there are much more sensible and cheaper vehicles to perform daily duties, but that's just me and my tight Yorkshire ways... šŸ˜†

Good luck with your search.

Edited to add: Always sensible to budget for belts too, again around Ā£1k these days with a reputable specialist.

BG are still the preferred option for refurbishing them - someone posted recently saying they had most parts to service them - hopefully for a good few years I hope šŸ¤ž

Regards Nick
Service consumable parts, seals, shafts etc are still available, but other internal components and the outer bodies are NLA. As I found out to my considerable cost a few years ago. As I've said before, it's only because a kind member of this forum was able to help me out that #407 continues to run on Sachs.

My brief when rebuilding the Impreza I have is it will be used a lot in winter so the Trophy won't be used much when wet and cold. I'm in the lucky position to be able to have a okay back up car.
So I know quiet a bit about the pain rust can cause.

I have seen it on Auto Trader and 19k is just more than I'm willing to spend. Id sooner get a Boxster or a Cayman for that money
I'm looking at this one at the moment, 187

Wonder if they would take an offer ?

Appreciate itā€™s more money, but I like a lower mileage car if itā€™s available. Yet I completely understand that a well maintained car can be very good too.

My worry about 187 is why has the timing Belt not been fitted in over a year (been left in boot)and the dampers not on the car.
Doesn't scream it's been cared for

My guess is that's it's been floating about in the trade for a good chunk of that time, and traders generally aren't going to go to the bother or expense of doing either of those things, potentially 2k + of maintenance work is going to wipe out any profit in the vehicle.

187,
That's a good point but after the last car I bought with my heart costing me a small fortune to sort out I'm a bit more careful. ( See profile pic šŸ˜)
Does have the advantage of Cup suspension for winter and get the Sach Dampers rebuilt over winter for a full suspension refresh in the spring. Hopefully nothing important is missing

277'
Think they will be looking way too much and I have the issue with VRT when I bring it back here.
