Hi, looking for advice on insuring and taxing a trophy, it would be a third car used as a weekend toy. For those of you with a few cars, who do you go with?, do they recognise no claims from your other cars or as I suspect, you have to insure as a zero no claims, fresh policy?
This will also be the first time I've bought a private car since the road tax rules changed.
Is it straight forward enough to tax the car when you buy it? As I wouldn't want to drive it home and get caught for no tax if it isn't instantly applied to the car. Sorry if that sounds daft but it used to be easy, just buying a car with some tax left on it.

If you haven’t owned a private car but have some company car driving/no cliams history the insurer may accept that. They all vary. You can only use no claims on one vehicle. If you do have some no cliams bonus some insurers may mirror it on a second car. I use Greenlight Insurance for my Trophy as I get agreed value on it. On my other 3 clios I just use comparison sites and choose from there. I have full NCB for each one but that’s what I’ve built up over the years on the cars I’ve owned
In respect of tax, in theory the tax is cancelled as soon as the transfer of keeper takes place. The new keeper has to tax It before using it on the road however this wouldn’t really come up until DVLA get the V5 from the previous keeper so driving it home wouldn’t really be an issue. If you do want to stick to the letter of the “law” then you can tax it online using the new keeper section of the V5 before you set off Home Having first insured it which presumably you would do if you were driving it home

The DVLA also have a backup car tax phone number, very useful if poor 3g/4g coverage when collecting your car. I had to use that service after an MOT when tax had expired but DVLA tax website was down. If at weekend it may be not be possible to tax if MOT data slow to be updated. Not that this is relevant in your case though.

My 182 is a 2nd car on a policy with 0yrs NCB. I use https://www.greenlightinsurance.co.uk/ who will 'mirror' any NCB you have on another policy. I've got 15yrs NCB on my main vehicle and this is mirrored on my 182 policy.

Regarding tax, as soon as you purchase you will need to tax which you can do online.

Cheers for the replies, I will check out green light, that's good that they mirror your existing no claims, hopefully won't be too expensive then.

I use classic line insurance, my Clio is insured for £270 for the year and that includes telling them about the non standard exhaust.. I have found them to be really good and don’t charge you admin fees to change address, update the policy, breakdown cover is al included as well.

I have stated the value of my car as £5k as it’s done about 120k so probably slightly over market value but for £20 they will value it and guarantee it against the value of the car.. worth a look but heard good things about greenlight too

Sounds good Pete, you certainly won’t get agreed value on a Trophy with Greenlight, they are only honouring existing business as I’m sure you know so anyone wanting agreed value will have to look elsewhere

When did that change? I got agreed value last April with Greenlight. The guy on the phone did say my agreed value was realistic, which probably helped.

Strange. I’ve just renewed mine with them today and he said it’s only existing customers they offer agreed value to. Have a look back through discussion section from about 12 months ago, loads of posts about them pulling it

I use Adrian Flux to insure mine, as they can provide cover for modifications and also offer agreed value (which I have, but not sure if available to new customers). I’ve found the premiums to be very competitive, the customer service generally very good and the cover level absolutely spot on [emoji106][emoji594]

I bought #491 last weekend, ended up going with Adrian Flux, purely because I had left it til the last minute before going to see the car , and my details were all on there system from previous cars, a few years back. But got agreed value, and the price wasn't too bad.
The weather hasn't been the best, so hoping the temperatures lift a bit so I can get some B road miles in!
