mines a bit like a yoyo, it does not move massively but i look 1 min and i have 1/2 a tank, then i look again ang its a bit under, then i look again and its a bit over, is this normal?
going round lots of sharp corners or up and down hills etc?

ahhh no, what i mean is what does the needle show on the gauge
It just hovers between/above the red mark.

ok, well mines on the last white line, when the light pops, so im still thinking there is something wrong with mine
I thought it was dependant on your average mpg as to how the computer works out when you're down to your last 50 miles, so if you've got crap mpg the light will come on higher up the gauge?

Sounds about right! Stick the dash in the diagnostic mode thingy and see how it behaves?
