Exhaust Spacing

Hello All,

When I brought my current Trophy (#53) it had an aftermarket Scorpion Exhaust that was poorly fitted with the tips literally only just poking out under the bumper which had led to the black exhaust surrounds having melted.

I have the original so can switch back, but wanted to try and make this one work if I can.

So initially I fiddled about to adjust it and got the tips to clear the back of the bumper and not touch the surrounds but they were still close per below.

I was hopeful, but the surrounds again were melting on a run.

SO I’ve looked again and in effected I’ve now added spacers and longer bolts to lower the exhaust hangers (surely Scorpion measured a 182?!) as no more adjustment otherwise to get the exhaust lower and more clearance. I have about 10mm all the way around.

Not great photos but now

So better clearance now. I brought new exhaust surround (£70!) from Germany so keen not to have to replace a second set.

I’ve been trying to google for 182 with aftermarket exhaust images to see positioning but seems all over the place from hanging below the cut outs massively to super close. Can anyone offer any advice re gap needed and any experience.

May not get to use the car for a few weeks now, appreciate I could just let it run on drive and see what happens and keep checking it !

Thanks James

Hi James

What type of hangers are you using ???? I changed my original ones for black grams to get a bit more stability and a little more lift.

Ed is the expert though and I'm sure he'll be along shortly with his vast knowledge :):):)

For some strange reason there were two depths of rear exhaust bracket (the one which attaches to the boot floor) fitted to these cars, and it seems a bit arbitrary, though the deeper brackets seem to be fitted to earlier cars and the shallower one later on in the production run. Other things can affect the 'sag' in the rear boxes, particularly the rubber sections in the aluminium brackets which is why you see some which are lopsided, this phenomenon I seem to see less of these days, so perhaps more folk are fitting the Grams insert which gives a firmer solution to the OEM rubber bit, which seems to do about 2 years then is knackered.. I don't think Renault ever really perfected a solution of keeping those very heavy standard twin rear exhaust boxes in check.

When it comes to fitting aftermarket exhausts, I think it's just a case of the sort of trial and error which you are already engaged in. Where they sit in the apertures is, I feel, down to personal preference, but a decent gap to the exhaust trims is essential, as you've found out as they melt easily and are a bit of a pain or alternatively quite expensive to source.

Good luck with finding your perfect hang... 😁 (y)

Thanks for the feedback. I’ll keep tinkering with it. I think the spacing is adequate, but assuming to your reply quite a bit of movement in the exhaust when the car is being driven and that’s having the outcome. May have to try the grams as you suggest.

Appreciate insight.
