European Car Insurance

I'm taking the Clio to Reims and Disneyland Paris next month (and then the 'Ring the month after), and so yesterday I called Admiral to arrange for my insurance to be extended to cover Europe, but they said for each trip abroad I need a 'green card', at £9 a time. What's that?

The reason I ask is because last year I borrowed my Dad's car and took it to Paris, and all Norwich Union wanted for that was £20 for a year's European cover.

So then, who's right? Did Norwich Union forget to mention a green card, or are Admiral making it up?

Thanks! :)

3rd party coverage is automatically applied if you have UK insurance - you should not pay for this.

However to have comprehensive cover you will need a Green Card unless your insurance policy states otherwise. Greenlight insurance claims the statement of cover is sufficient for Europe while others will send you a Green Card.

Just do what your insurance company says and pay for the cover although personally I would never go with an insurance company that charges for a Green Card. Direct Line gave 90 days free European cover and Greenlight (Highway insurance) doesn't charge either.

Happy driving.

Thanks very much for that, Ollie.

Considering how much I saved by using Admiral, I'll have to swallow the £9. Thanks again! :D
