I think I am going to change the engine oil to be safe (currently at almost 7k miles).

Rather than putting in Elf, I was considering going to Castrol Edge 5w-30 (they don't make a 5w-40).

Do you guys think there would be an issue with this (either with it being Castrol Edge or being 5w-30)?

Cheers in advance...

Thanks Richard. I may get Castrol 0W-40. I am a bit bent on the Castrol product as it has served me very well in both of my BMW 330ci's over 5 years (including track days).

At the risk of being heretical, look on Cliosport for posts about oil by 'Oilman'. It would seem that two of the best recommendations are Motul and Silkolene - it is to do with the varying type of polymer structures that qualify for the synthetic definition. Mobil is OK, apart from the lack of 5-40, not sure about Castrol. It is probably sensible to carry out the first change sooner rather than later, but thereafter modern synthetics are more than capable of going the full 12,000 - in fact most of them meet the specifications necessary to go to 18,000 miles.

Thanks George.

I have indeed read Oilman's posts. He does not really address if it is safe to use 0w-40 in the engines rather tends to focus on 5W's and above.

As for brand - it would take quite a lot to convince me to move over to an alternative (non-Castrol) brand. That said - the top (read: expensive) brands probably won't have much between them.

Renault recommend 5-40, but I think that their charts do show some overlap. You will probably find that there are some different build tolerances in the F4R engine let alone slightly more aggressive cam profiles which would benefit from the extra protection of a 5-40, but then most top grade oiIs are, as I mentioned before, way over-specced anyway. We used to work next door to the Ethyl corporation who specialise in fuel and oil additives for the major oil companies and their chief chemist confirmed this level of over specfication. It is also interesting that years ago Cosworth used to recommend that the HB F1 engine should be run on normal Mobil One (the thicker variety) but of course the oil was changed every 500 miles by default.

I know what you are saying about being loyal to a particular brand that has not let you down before, but if you are open for suggestion, then I can recommend Silkolene Pro-s 5w-40, as recommended to me by oilman. It is a top quality ester based oil and the price is pretty reasonable to, I paid £65 for 10 litres and it was delivered the next day.

Have a look at http://www.opieoils.co.uk/lubricants.htm, the guys who run this outfit (including oilman himself) are extremely helpful :D

OK guys - I will definately check out the Silkolene product... and the website!

I'll ask the mechanic at Renault as well - he seemed to know his stuff... (a refreshing change in my view!).
