Brake slight Clunk 'click' type sound

Hi All,

Have Brembo discs and ferrodo 2500's fitted to the front and recently I have noticed a slight clunk or click as soon as brakes are applied. This clunk type sound is only at very slow speed n ONLY when brakes are applied. NOT when pulling away or at speed. Brakes (discs and pads) only replaced 80 miles ago, possibly less. I have read that it can simply be that as the pads are fitted without the shims, then the clunk/click is the pad making contact/moving in the caliper. If someone can shed any light on this, this would be great. Car stops absolutely fine. Is this common for ferrodo type pads ?

my ds pads click on the first press after being sat but that's all.

Yes, thats what I'm getting. First press only then nothing on the consecutive 2/3 presses at slow speed. However even after driving, I am still getting that first click/clunk. This is very slight please note.

With this combo you need to file a few mm off the pad sides so they are quite loose in the caliper and so don't bind. Also bin the shims.

Hi Marrow. Yes, I am aware of that. They were fitted at SJM specialists so sure they are 100%. I think that in fact they are very much free to move hence the clunk. The clunk was still there after driving, albeit town driving. But like I said, only hear when driving very slowly (when reversing and moving forward). I press brake and clunk, release, press no clunk which by that time the car will come to a halt. Just wanted to see if its common as many people seem to mention this after a quick search. One thing to check is probably to ensure that the caliper is tight and not loose. Im wondering whether I should remove the battery etc and check the gearbox mount. It don't get the clunk on acceleration etc so I don't think its a case of engine movement. Then again, one of the bolts on the engine mount was loose. It may be that I am being a little on the obsessive side however just wanted to see what other peoples taught/experiences with the pads were.

As you say just check everything is done up and the bolts are tight - including wheel nuts. If you move the disc back and forth by hand you should be able to check how much movement there is for the pads. To be producing an audible clunk their must be quite a bit. Pop one shim back in maybe or the two (if you still have them)

Perhaps also check top mounts ( hand tight) and lower strut nuts.

Spoke to Dan who was ok with the type of sound I described. Dan said that it would naturally clunk if you first reverse and then move forward with the DS2500 pads given the play and movement in the caliper. I need to now see whether the clunk is constant when brakes are up to temperature and moving forward.
