A technical but rather pointless tyre question...

I noticed whilst examining a new Pilot Exalto 2 this morning that the tread blocks on both edges seem to have a random variation of tread block widths around the tyre, now obviously this is not random, it is defined in the same manner by the mould but how did they decide upon this configuration? If you can spot a pattern in there you're a smarter man than me, it looks completely random, within a certain range of widths.

What is the reason for having this variation in tread block widths? Is it the secret to their miraculous grip?

No Cue, I haven't been on the meths again. I found some lighter fluid last night and I never mix my drinks.

I've got 2 exaltos sitting about the room, I too have spotted this but cant find any pattern to it.. Apart from both tyre's are exactly the same.

is it not repeated every 3 to 4 inches? it may be down to the contact patch and how the tyre hits the surface i.e. different types of surfaces need different types of tread for better grip - wet tarmac less rubber, dry tarmac more rubber, loose gravel etc etc..... so it's like a jack of all trades tyre.....

that would be my guess, but I haven't looked at them so don't know what the configuration looks like of the top of my head.

I have not got as far a grovelling under the car - other duties call, but normally random tread patterns are intended to help break up certain road noise frequenices - i.e to stop droning.

Cool, thanks George, I was hoping you'd be along with an answer. Forgot all about road noise. What excellent pub trivia.
