I'm currently in the market for a hillclimb car as I want to start competing in the next couple of years, having had an adult-lifelong ambition to do so. I figured that I'm old and sensible enough now not to wrap it up on the 1st corner... (famous last words 🤣 ).

Thus far, I've been on the lookout for something obviously Clio 1*2 shaped, but nothing quite right has come along. The temptation to hillclimb any of our current crop of cars is a no-no as they're too nice and rare to risk.

As some of may have read on here, I attended a day and evening 'Rallye' style event at Harewood at the back end of last year and really enjoyed the mix of vehicles, but there was a lovely 205 GTi competing that I took a bit of a shine to. The damn thing has only come up for sale hasn't it!

I'm going to have to be very careful when the bidding goes live on this!

OOo eeerrr.. That looks a weapon....
And lots of fun...

If its primarily a hillclimb car, you want to use it for, there is some weight that looks like it can come out of the car. Rear wiper + motor, electric windows, rear seat, the spotlights etc etc...

It all depends on which class itl be eligible for...Seeing as its already modified.

As the old saying goes,,

If you want to go faster, first add lightness....

Might be worth trying to find out who did the rebuild on the engine.? IE reputable or not...

A mate of mine recently bought a TVR Tuscan at auction, and did a lot of due diligence on the car.
It sold for very reasonable money, and it seems he got a gem of a car....

Ill be watching with interest.

Go on Ed you know you want to....Motorsport is addictive, especially competing.

PS,, Another old mate of mine still competes at Harewood in a E46 BMW M3, its a golden yellow sort of colour... He also has a Porsche 944 S2 in rare maritime blue that he occasionally uses...You might have seen it/them at Harewood....

It was road registered back in the late 90's purely just for the driver to get to circuit when he competed in the Super Coupe, it is registered on a 'H' plate.

It has had a Custom Cages Multipoint T45 cage fitted inc Grp N plating under the car. The complete shell has also been seam welded.

The car has done sub 20,000miles.

Wow! Certainly looks like a cool project, slightly more work needed than I’ve got time for I’m afraid. I’m after something ready to go. I was tempted by the Clio Cup car in the Oulton Park Gold Cup auction last year, but it sold before bidding started, and ex-Mark Fish car, I think the estimate on it was around £14k.

Yes, I’d noticed that Dave. Would a cage not go some way to adding stiffness back into the shell though?

Cool idea Ed, sounds like it would be a hell of a way to get some brilliant motorsport kicks and
not have to spend a fortune either.

I would have thought a good roll cage would more than add enough stiffness into the shell,
to make up for any flex coming from a sunroof.

But I would query whether you would notice much of a difference between a non sunroof and sunroofed car?

Granted, thats why there are so few standard roofed cars remaining, most of them were bought up to go rallying etc.
