Any interest here?

I have decided to sell both cups and keep the Trophy. This car is amazing, gutted to be selling but I need to be sensible.


K7 CUP plate included
FSH, tonns of history
Will have 12 month MOT
Will have the belts done for the sale at my specialist (will be its 3rd)
Absolutely immaculate & oem
Will be fully detailed too, by myself

You don't seem to see many low miler cups. So you can pretty much set the market at the minute. I can imagine it will
Be shiny!

I looked at a 1 owner 27k example
For £4500.. terrible unfortunately. Been mothballed by owner few years before. Didn't have the heart to low ball him.

Totally agree.. if you believe you have the best at any point. The. Why not Charge the most. Unless there are 3 better ones at £Xk cheaper your not over priced.

I believe there's a 172 Cup with 13,500 miles on it in a collection that my good friend looks after... however, that will likely never be sold and I don't think it's even been driven in the last 5 years (other than turning the engine over and keeping it fresh and maintained).

That's a lovely looking 172 Cup Dawn and a credit to you. I too would be very interested, but can't really justify it for the asking price.

I get that there is unlikely to be one available with lower mileage, that they're truly one of the last analogue hot hatches with no ABS and no traction control, but they're so ropey when it comes to the interior and seats I'd be seeking a more bargain price to reflect the 'bargain basement interior' as Evo described it.

I guess what I'm saying is that I'm unsure of their ability to appreciate in value in the same way a Trophy and V6 have.

All the best with the sale. I'm sure it's perfect for someone. Would love to see lot's more detailed photo's of interior and exterior if you take them for the sale; it really does look like a great example.

My cup has 19k on it so it's not the only one out there...

Not hugely better, but at least both are better cabins to be in, have superior front seats to the 172 Cup and don't have interior trim that matches the body paint colour.

Folk dumping 30/40/50/60k are buying v6's due to the quality of a French interior?

I'd very much doubt the interior has much to do with it; we all know that. They're buying V6's because they have a V6 engine, a crazy pumped up body shape and are a bit of a mad two seater of which the likes are never to be seen again.

And at current prices.. you would have a £10k minimum premium on a trophy vs dawns 172 cup price.

Yes, maybe you would, although the record setting price achieved by Hurlingham Cars in West London for a Trophy doesn't seem to be attainable anymore. The one in Ireland that was up for £19,995 is now £17,995, and still for sale after three/four months on Pistonheads. I think the one in Ireland has slightly lower miles and greater history (all from Rentech vs. a main dealer) too. All that is immaterial though, just because a similar low mileage Trophy would be £10k more, doesn't make a 172 Cup a potential Trophy or V6.

For the sake of a bit of a debate let's look at the 172 Cup and what differentiates it from the crowd. Then we might be able to evaluate whether it's going to appreciate significantly in value in future.

- No ABS, proper drivers car that is going to take no prisoners; that's going to scare some people on the road. I'm sure it wouldn't any users of this forum or potential buyers for such a car. It's going to make for a few moments if it's pushed in the wet.

- No traction control, well, theoretically you can switch it off on a Trophy (I don't know about a V6), and when it's off, it's off off, not some BMW nanny that's still watching in the background. As the traction control is rarely flickering on the Trophy I can't see the lack of it on the Cup causing an issue, as long as the driver isn't an idiot in the wet. The fact it can be switched off on others, the lack of it on the Cup, is only helpful if you want to properly track the Cup. Like the lack of ABS too.

- It's a great colour of blue, has silver seat belts, and has the Turini's. Blue is great, so is capsicum, I'd have purchased a white Trophy. I don't see colour as justifying huge future value. Turini's are great, they seem readily available, as are silver seat belts.

- It's stripped of sound deadening, any creature comforts like A/C (or like the Trophy does it still have climate control which actually does the same, but with less control, but still has all the pipes and gas meaning weight), had gel badges on the doors, and has thinner glass to save further weight; which is cool.

- There were around 2,300 sold in the UK. OK many of those have been butchered and crashed, and Dawn's is super low miles and in mint condition, but they were never a 'rare' car along the lines of 500 Trophy's and however many V6's made it to the UK.

- It was the first RenaultSport Clio to have the Cup package, spring and damper ratings increased etc.

I'm not an owner of a 172 Cup, so I'm sure I've missed aspects, but that approximately covers the main bits, I think. Reading the above back, what I see as the differentiators are that it's stripped of weight (thin glass, lack of sound deadening), has no ABS (proper driver status) and it was the first Clio with a Cup chassis.

It's not a rare car (well Dawn's is based on low mileage and outstanding condition), it was never manufactured to be a limited production run. It's not a homologation special like an S1 106 Rallye or Escort Cosworth, Lancia Evo etc., doesn't have a V6, doesn't have trick motorsport dampers that were put on on only 500 UK cars, doesn't have a huge media following as a stand out car (it's respected in the right circles), and it's not like Renault have a consistent history in stripped out road racers like Porsche have with the RS or RSR's.

It's a cool car, and Dawn's is especially lovely, but bar it being stripped out and having no ABS what's the significant differentiator to make it extra unique in the future? Is being stripped and lacking ABS enough? Maybe.

As only around 400 of the RenaultSport Clio 200 Cups were made they also might be an interesting punt. Especially if in a unique colour like Alien Green or Liquid Yellow and have the Speedline's and Recaro's.

I note Dawn has a lovely car collection which she can rightly be proud of, consisting of a V6, a Trophy, and two 172 Cups (and maybe other cars we don't know about). Of those, which is she selling?

None of this is written to anger anyone, diminish the quality of Dawn's lovely 172 Cup, or get her to lower the price (as I'm sure someone will pay what she seeks), and is all just my perspective; trying to be as objective as possible.

As we have all said before a Trophy is not worth the sum of its parts.

Somone bought a refurbed pair of sachs for £700, you add up the rest and tell me how it works.

Dawn's cup is worth every penny and so is anything similar.

Quite how I didn't realise that I don't know, given the amount of rally and circuit racing cars about. Thanks for pointing it out and waking me out of my daze. In my view that does make a huge amount of difference.

Seems the Clio 172 was homologated for both Group N

I think the 172 Cup was specifically the Group A car. As the Group A is the 'Ragnotti' and corresponding pictures have the lovely blue dash strips that correspond to the 172 Cup as well as the Turini's. Also there is only 'heating' and 'ventilation' listed.

The Group N documents look like a standard 172 Clio in the pictures and also have air-conditioning listed, which the 172 Cup lacks. Also the Group N lists hydraulique avec ABS for the braking. Whereas the Group A is simply hydraulique. So the 172 Cup is a proper Group A homologation special. Nice.

I agree, a Trophy isn't really worth the sum of it's parts, prices are down to the 'only 500', press coverage, etc. etc. From that perspective a Trophy has far less heritage than a 172 Cup.
