Review of my trophy restoration parts list

Hi all,

#256 will be going in for a glass out respray in the next few weeks.

While part hoarding I've been making a list of things to replace at the same time. Have I missed anything and do you know how I can source some a Renault windscreen.

Front of car
- new windscreen - no idea how to get one atm
- new windowscreen seals - already purchased
- rear view mirror - is it this one - > eBay link
- new grill - RPD link

Side of car
-
Window seal kit - RPD Link 1 and RPD Link 2
- Trophy stickers - from here
- new door stickers - restorer providing

Rear of car
- clio badge - ebay link
- renault badge - eBay link
- sports badge - RPD link
- new wiper arm and base - already purchased.

Wow Mike - #256 is going to look very cool after all this spend -

Do you mind me asking though - how much is a full Respray nowadays in your area ????

Make sure you're sitting down first.

In London I'm being quoted 7-12k, slightly outside of London it's 5-10k and a little bit further out its 3-10k.

I'm happy to bring the car to Scotland if it means a great work and a great price compared to London. Just struggling to find anyone up north currently.

I've just fallen of my chair Mike after those quote's -

What do you get for 3k compared to 10k out of London - is 10k windows out and under-body ???

I'd want a Wayne Corini job doing for 10k - if he is still trading.

All quotes are for a glass out full respray with three coats of 2k paint. The 3k quote is for two layers of water based paint, 2 layers of clear and a plastic type paint to bring the colour back to the plastic trim.

I'm dubious of the 3k quote as it's so cheap.

The underneath will be done separately for £1500 by a dinatrol specialist. Full clean, surface rust treatment, full coat of rubberised dinatrol, top coat of dinatrol paint and all cavities filled with dinatrol liquid/foam.

Think I've said it before, I could of bought a 15k mint example but I'm making my own perfect example.

I just got a £1500 quote and it scares me, I still can't work out why or how it's that cheap.

The quote is the same as the others and they've confirmed they will;
- A full glass out respray.
- dents pulled and skimmed
- Bumpers, aerial, badges, side skirts and door side trims removed.
- front wings, doors and bootlid to be painted on the visable inside parts. Remove as needed.

Car to look like it's brand new, you make out reflections in the paint and no orange peel.

Mike I'm obviously commenting here from a bias stance but mate it's too good to be true and you will end up disappointed. When it comes to major work like that you need to either pay the money, or do it yourself, if you've the kit and knowledge. There's not enough 'time' in 1500 quid to do a quality job

That's my thinking as well. It fills me with dread to think what they rollout as satisfactory work.

Exactly it'll be just a red Clio to them with another car coming in soon. Paint is the final product in whether something looks great or not. Unless they've got an interest in doing a great job it'll end up being an average one. I.e. find yourself a painter that knows a Trophy 👍 (or buy mine 🤣)

I’m just wondering @Mike256 if your car warrants a full respray? Given what I consider to be the pretty good finish on the factory paint even 20 years down the line now on many of these cars. I think there’d have to be something fairly major to make me want to repaint the whole thing, especially when you consider the expense involved to do it properly these days.

Finding someone to trust when it comes to painting cars these days is an ongoing quest for me. And I’ve yet to find someone to trust. I had a quote about a year ago to tidy up a small area of very minor micro blistering on the old Mini ( it’s very slight and most folk would never see it). I was quoted £7k to rectify it… admittedly from a place whose work looks very good. However, at that point I decided we’d live with it for a bit.

I hope you find someone/somewhere to do a quality job if you decide to go for it. 👍

The previous owners haven't taken the best care of #256 and she's a looker from 20ft nowadays. I would call her country lane battle ready now.

Being brutal and completely open, these are the problems with #256.
- six shades of red now
- two or three dubious touch up resprays
- every panel has scratches through to the primer. A few went to the metal.
- someone did an awful touch up, one quarter is covered in orange peel and she has reactions under the paint that just look like rust.

The car definitely deserves better and I want to make it something I can hand over to my son in 10 years time.

Going back to my list, have I missed anything or picked the wrong part?

Only the Clio badge is the correct one out of that selection Mike.

The proper original ‘Renault’ badge has an underline, and is seemingly no longer source-able even from Europe. There is a close version available which might be what you have here, a gen part is available from France.

The ‘Sport’ badge on RPD is a later version, with a smaller / different font. It was never fitted to the 182’s. However, my car wears one of these (originals were nicked back in 2006/7 I think it was from the 1st owner Douglas), and to be honest I’ve lived with them and they don’t bother me too much. I have the correct badges in my hoard but can’t be bothered with the faff of fitting them currently. The proper Sport badge is available from those guys in France who @NickReilly063 earns Splitter commission from… 😂😂😂

I’ll find a link to the French site in a moment.

I waited four months for my splitter but it was worth it.

Thanks Ed, will start spending the pennies.
