5200rpm is as you said the point where the valve timing changes to 'higher lift'. What colour was the smoke? Have you checked the oil level, incase theres too much? Was anything else happening except from the smoke?

Got Brembo HC discs and DS2500 on mine, Olly had fitted them previously before I bought it. Definately need some heat before they work and are noisey at low speeds but they are very good otherwise. Just if you go for them be cautious when its cold and raining.
